Iserlohn City Centre Becomes a Sports Arena

On Saturday, August 23, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the city of Iserlohn will transform its city centre into a large leisure area with a sports and games programme. The venue is the area between the Old Town Hall and Schillerplatz — the heart of Iserlohn's city centre. Iserlohn sports clubs will present themselves with hands-on stations, large play equipment will be set up, and trend sports will be showcased — all with free admission.

Concept — Revitalising City Centres Through Sport

The Sport and Games Day is part of the federal programme „Sustainable City Centres and Quarters”. Background: many German city centres are struggling with vacant properties and a loss of quality of stay. For one Saturday, the Sport and Games Day turns Iserlohn's pedestrian zone into a vibrant, attractive experience area — and shows citizens what their city centre can be. The federal programme supports precisely these kinds of formats that bring back attractiveness to city centres. It is locally supported by the Sparkasse Iserlohn.

What You Can Experience

The Iserlohn sports clubs are bringing their full programme:

• Rodeo Bull — the mechanical bull that throws you off as soon as you're not paying attention
• Climbing Wall — mobile climbing wall with safety equipment — for all ages
• Football Darts — the goal wall becomes a dartboard, you shoot footballs at the points
• XXL Foosball — life-size table football — teams compete against each other
• Reaction Table — reflex test with LED stations for the fastest reaction
• Bouncy Castle for the little ones
• Roller Slide — a special slide set up in the urban space
• Children's Construction Site — diggers, tools, and construction toys
• Memory Games and Giant Jenga

Clubs Showcase Themselves

The Iserlohn sports clubs are using the day to introduce themselves — football, basketball, cheerleading, Bosseln (a Westphalian variant of outdoor bowling), and trend sports like Disc Golf and Hobby Horsing (riding on stick horses — a sport that has grown significantly in recent years). Anyone looking for a new sport or wanting to introduce their children to clubs will get the perfect overview in one afternoon.

Iserlohn — the Forest City in the Sauerland

Iserlohn is the largest city in the Märkischer Kreis district in South Westphalia, located on the edge of the Sauerland region. With around 92,000 inhabitants and an extensive city forest (Iserlohn calls itself the "Forest City"), it is well-positioned culturally and sportingly. Famous are the Iserlohn Roosters (first-division ice hockey team), the Iserlohn Friedensbasketballer, and a dense network of sports clubs of all kinds. The Sport and Games Day makes this diversity visible.

The event is explicitly family-friendly and will be held in all weather conditions — all stations are sufficiently weatherproof or under canopies. Since admission is free, the day is perfect for a spontaneous family activity on Saturday morning.
