Volksfest and wine festival during the chestnut blossom season at the foot of the Palatinate Forest
The noble chestnut (Castanea sativa), also known as edible chestnut or Palatinate Keschde, shapes the forests on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest like almost no other tree species. Originally introduced by the Romans, it found ideal growing conditions here and is now a symbol of the region. Frankweiler is located in the middle of this chestnut belt between Annweiler and Landau, so it is only natural that the village dedicates its own festival to the blossom.
The Chestnut Blossom Festival takes place in the center of Frankweiler. The festival mile stretches along the main street and past the village square. Wine stands from local vintners alternate with food vendors, craft stalls, and small club stands. The atmosphere is familiar and rural.
Culinary classics of the Palatinate dominate: Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with pork and bread), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Flammkuchen (a type of flatbread), Dampfnudel (sweet steamed bun), possibly with chestnut cream specialties or pickled chestnuts from the previous year. The Frankweiler vintners serve their Riesling, Spätburgunder, and Weißburgunder wines. Schorle (wine mixed with sparkling water) and Sekt (sparkling wine) are also offered at several stands.
The festival is also a good starting point for hikes into the surrounding chestnut forests. Various circular trails start directly in Frankweiler or in neighboring Albersweiler and lead through areas like the chestnut biotope or to Rietburg Castle, a hilltop castle above Rhodt.
The organizer is the municipality of Frankweiler with the support of local clubs and vintners. The festival is timed to coincide with the blooming period of the noble chestnut, which, depending on the year, lasts from mid-May to June. Combined with Frankweiler's character as a Riesling village, this creates an attractive offering for hikers, wine lovers, and families from all over the Southern Palatinate.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
