Four days of medieval market, funfair and autumn market in Kassel's city centre
The Casseler Freyheit is one of Kassel's most historic city festival concepts. Its origins lie in a decree by Landgrave Heinrich the Iron from the 14th century, which granted the city exemption from certain taxes ("Freyheit"). For almost 700 years, this term has shaped Kassel's cultural life. The Herbst-Freyheit is the autumn counterpart to the Frühlings-Freyheit and will take place from October 29th to November 1st, 2026, in Kassel's city centre – four days daily from 11 am to 6 pm.
The Herbst-Freyheit is spread across three central squares in the major North Hessian city:
A highlight of the Herbst-Freyheit is the medieval market, organised by Vehi Mercatus, a specialist in historical markets. Craftsmen demonstrate old techniques – blacksmithing, leatherwork, pottery – jesters and stilt walkers roam the city centre, and medieval music groups create the atmosphere.
In parallel, the family funfair runs with rides for all ages, carousels, a Ferris wheel, and food stalls offering Hessian specialities and sweets. Admission is free – costs are only incurred for rides and stalls.
The festival traditionally coincides with a Sunday opening for shopping: Kassel's city centre shops extend their opening hours, making the Freyheit also a shopping event.
Kassel, with around 200,000 inhabitants, is the major city of North Hesse and particularly worth visiting in the darker months: Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe (UNESCO World Heritage) is a destination year-round, and the city centre shines in autumnal light around the Herbst-Freyheit. Karlsaue park, the Orangerie, and the Brothers Grimm Museum are just a few minutes away.
A classic four-day city centre festival in the North Hessian metropolis. The programme is spread across three squares, combining medieval spectacle with modern family fun.
Free admission. Costs for rides, food, drinks, and market purchases.
By car: A7 or A44, exit Kassel-Mitte. Car parks: City-Point, Karlshöhe, or Friedrichsplatz. By public transport: Tram lines 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8 to Königsplatz, Friedrichsplatz, or Theater.
Free admission. Opening hours daily 11 am to 6 pm. Costs for rides, food, and market purchases.
The Sunday opening for shopping offers the chance to combine the city festival with a shopping trip. For the full medieval market experience, arrive in the late morning when the jesters and stilt walkers begin their rounds.
