Candlelight Serenade — Tradition Over 50 Years Old
The Candlelight Serenade on the Danube is one of the most beautiful light festivals in Southern Germany and a must-attend event for Ulm enthusiasts. For over 50 years, it has taken place on the Saturday evening before Schwörmontag (the third Monday in July) — as a quiet, atmospheric prelude to the boisterous Schwör weekend with Nabada and Hafenfest. The Ulmer Donaufreunde organize the event on a voluntary basis.
20,000 Floating Lights
The concept is simple and incredibly effective: at dusk, around 9:30 PM, the historic Ulmer Schachteln — the traditional narrow, long wooden boats of Danube shipping — place the 20,000 red tea lights on the river. The lights float downstream together, faster or slower depending on the current and water level, forming swarms, eddies, islands, and tracing their path along both banks of the Danube.
Atmosphere on the Banks
Thousands of spectators gather on the banks in Ulm (Donaupromenade, Friedrichsau) and Neu-Ulm (Glacis, Petrusplatz). Families with picnic blankets occupy the best spots as early as 7 PM. Quiet anticipation, hushed conversations, eating ice cream by the water, sunset over the Minster — and then the magical moment: the first light appears on the water, slowly followed by the next, hundreds, finally thousands. The lights drift past the city like a red carpet of light.
Minster Tower as a Backdrop
In the background stands the Ulm Minster tower — at 161.5 meters, the tallest church tower in the world. At dusk, it casts its shadow over the city; later, it is illuminated. The combination of the historic city skyline, the Minster, and the floating lights on the water is one of the most spectacular urban displays in Southern Germany.
Fireworks to Conclude
If the weather is dry, a fireworks display follows to conclude, fired from four positions over the river. The reflection on the Danube, the echo from the Minster and the city walls, the floating lights in the foreground — a hard-to-beat image. In case of rain or unfavorable wind, the fireworks may be canceled, but the lights will still be released.
Where to Watch Best
The Donaupromenade in Ulm offers the classic view — lights drift directly past the bank, Minster in the background. The Friedrichsau in Ulm is more family-friendly with more space. The Glacis-Anlagen in Neu-Ulm offer the opposite perspective with a view of the Ulm city skyline. Tip: Arrive early (before 8 PM) if you want good spots — the promenade is extremely crowded at the time of the release.
Schwörwochenende in Context
The Candlelight Serenade ushers in the Schwörwochenende — the most important days in Ulm's annual calendar. They are followed by: Sunday with the Hafenfest in Ulm and the Nabada (swimming in the river) — the famous water procession with rafts down the Danube, and Monday, Schwörmontag, when the mayor presents his accountability report in the market square. A tradition since 1397 — one of the oldest democratic city festivals in Germany.
Ulm — Danube City with the World's Tallest Church Tower
The city of Ulm (AGS 08421, independent district) at the border of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria has around 130,000 inhabitants. Famous for the Ulm Minster, the Fischerviertel with its half-timbered houses by the water, Danube shipping, and as the birthplace of Albert Einstein. The Candlelight Serenade is one of its most poetic events — not a pop spectacle, but deliberate silence, floating lights, shared atmosphere.
