About Buxtehude Oktoberfest

The Buxtehude Oktoberfest is entering its third edition in 2026. From Friday, September 25th, to Sunday, September 27th, 2026, the Altstadtverein Buxtehude e.V. invites you to a Bavarian-influenced festival weekend on the Rathausplatz of the Hanseatic city. The keg tapping ceremony on Friday evening at 7 PM officially opens the festival tent, and for three days, Northern German conviviality blends with the atmosphere of the Bavarian Oktoberfest. Dirndls and Lederhosen are explicitly welcome — those who come in traditional attire will fit perfectly into the festive ambiance. Live music with Oktoberfest classics, Bavarian food, and beer in Maßkrüge (liter mugs) create the typical Wiesn atmosphere right in the heart of Buxtehude's old town. On Sunday, a Sunday shopping event by Buxtehude's businesses complements the festival program. Thus, the Oktoberfest combines festival culture with the revitalization of the city center — a proven concept of the Altstadtverein.

A Young Tradition with Great Resonance

The Buxtehude Oktoberfest is a relatively young event — its third edition will be celebrated in 2026. The Altstadtverein Buxtehude e.V. has established the format to liven up the city center in September and contribute to local retail. The first two editions were so well-received that the festival has become a firm fixture in Buxtehude's annual calendar.

Bavarian Atmosphere in a Northern German Hanseatic City

Bavarian festival culture in a Northern German Hanseatic city might seem unusual at first glance — but it works surprisingly well. The Oktoberfest format with its festival tent, Maßkrug, Bavarian cuisine, and traditional dress is now widespread throughout Germany and creates a festive atmosphere even far from Bavaria. Buxtehude thus joins a tradition of Northern German Oktoberfest events.

Keg Tapping Ceremony on Friday at 7 PM

The traditional keg tapping ceremony opens the festival weekend on Friday at 7 PM. A representative of the city administration, the Altstadtverein, or a guest of honor taps the first keg — a ritual inspired by the Munich Wiesn tradition. With the first Maßkrug, the Buxtehude Oktoberfest officially begins.

Festival Tent on the Rathausplatz

The festival tent is located on the Rathausplatz, the historic center of Buxtehude's old town. Inside the tent, there is space for tables and benches, a stage provides room for live music, and a bar area serves guests with draft beer and Bavarian specialties. The atmosphere is convivial, loud, and hearty.

Sunday Shopping

On Sunday, September 27th, Buxtehude's shops will be open for Sunday shopping. The Oktoberfest thus acts as a revitalizing anchor for the city center. Visitors can combine shopping, a stroll through the city, and a festival visit for a fulfilling day out.

Buxtehude Oktoberfest — edition 2026

The Buxtehude Oktoberfest 2026 will take place for the third time from Friday, September 25th, to Sunday, September 27th, on the Rathausplatz in Buxtehude. On Friday at 7 PM, the traditional keg tapping ceremony will open the festival tent. For three days, a Bavarian festival atmosphere, Oktoberfest music, food, and Maßkrüge will dominate the event — Dirndls and Lederhosen are welcome. On Sunday, a Sunday shopping event by Buxtehude's businesses will complement the festival weekend. The detailed program with bands and special promotions will be published by the Altstadtverein Buxtehude in late summer.
