Festive anniversary weekend with torchlight procession for the 1175th anniversary of the spa town of Bad Laer
The first documented mention of Bad Laer dates far back into the Middle Ages. In 2026, the community will celebrate its 1175th anniversary with a year-round festival program, the highlight of which is the Fackelfest on the third weekend in June. The anniversary commemorates the spa town's history as a brine spring community, a stopover on old trade routes, and home to a vibrant club landscape. The municipal administration and local initiatives have designed an expanded supporting program for this occasion.
At the heart of the festival is the torchlight procession, where numerous citizens walk through the town center with burning torches. Accompanied by music bands and festive illuminations on the Thieplatz and historical buildings, an atmosphere is created that underscores the centuries-old connection of the Bad Laer residents to their home community. The procession traditionally starts in the evening and culminates in a joint celebration at the Thieplatz.
A festival tent, stage, club stands, and gastronomic offerings will be set up around the Fackelfest. A historical market, performances by local clubs, concerts by regional bands, and a family day with a program for the youngest guests are planned. The exact details of the anniversary program will be published by the municipality in good time.
A three-day festival weekend is planned, starting with a festive opening on Friday, reaching its peak on Saturday with a community festival, club stands, and stage program, and concluding on Sunday with a morning pint, family activities, and the end of the festival. The torchlight procession traditionally takes place on Saturday evening.
The Fackelfest thrives on the involvement of local clubs, schools, church communities, and families. In the anniversary year, a particularly large number of Bad Laer initiatives will be involved in the program.
The detailed 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years and will be supplemented by the anniversary program for the 1175th anniversary.
