Rustic, atmospheric Christmas market in the historic castle courtyard of the Oberbergisches Land
What sets the Burgweihnacht Denklingen apart from the many Christmas markets in the region is the setting: the market takes place in the courtyard of the historic Burg Denklingen — a medieval castle whose walls, towers and inner courtyard create a uniquely atmospheric setting. When torches and strings of lights bathe the castle courtyard in golden light in the evening, you feel transported to another era.
Burg Denklingen is a medieval castle complex in the Oberbergisches Land. Originally built as a lowland castle in wood and earth, it developed over the centuries into a stone castle and decisively shaped the history of the village of Denklingen. Today it is a central cultural monument of the municipality of Reichshof and a venue for the Burgweihnacht and other cultural events.
The municipality of Reichshof (around 19,000 inhabitants) lies in the Oberbergischer Kreis in southern North Rhine-Westphalia — at the transition from the Bergisches Land to the Westerwald. The region is shaped by half-timbered villages, rolling hills, forests and reservoirs. Denklingen is one of the districts of Reichshof. In summer, the Oberbergisches is a paradise for hiking and cycling; in winter, an insider tip for atmospheric Advent markets away from the crowded big-city markets.
The Burgweihnacht Denklingen is not a mass market: no Ferris wheel, no commercial mega-stalls. Instead, handcraft, regional exhibitors, an old castle wall as backdrop, and a programme aimed at children and adults alike. Anyone looking for the classic, quiet, atmospheric Advent market — especially by torchlight in the evening — will find it here.
The 2026 Burgweihnacht transforms the historic courtyard of Burg Denklingen on the last weekend of November into a particularly atmospheric Advent market. Craft stalls, regional food, Christmas singing and a children's programme with Father Christmas and a storyteller make the market a family highlight in the Oberbergisches Land.
