Open-Air Theatre in the Castle Garden of Parsberg Castle since 1983
The Burgspiele Parsberg are one of the most traditional open-air theatres in the Oberpfalz region. The venue is the castle garden of the medieval Parsberg Castle, high above the market town of Parsberg in the Neumarkt district of the Oberpfalz. The castle itself is an impressive landmark of the region; its garden offers an open stage and seating area under the open sky – the castle wall as a historic backdrop.
The roots of the theatre date back to 1950, when the historical play "Haug von Parsberg" was performed for the thousandth anniversary of Parsberg – a play about the Reformation-era knight Haug von Parsberg. In 1982, a dedicated citizens' group re-established the current Burgspiele, supported by the Parsberg Adult Education Centre. The reopening premiere on July 15, 1983, marks the modern beginning of the festival.
For over three decades, Manfred Janikulla shaped the ensemble – with Bavarian comedies, Viennese folk theatre, and classics like "Jedermann". From 2016, Bernhard Hübl took over and expanded the programme to include children's theatre. Since the 2026 season, Florian Wein, artistic director of the OVIGO Theatre Nuremberg, is the new artistic director, bringing fresh impulses from the independent theatre scene.
In 2018, the Burgspiele Parsberg received the Oberpfalz Homeland Award from the Bavarian Minister-President – recognition of how the festival brings together regional identity and volunteer commitment. The ensemble is largely voluntary, and performances are accompanied by live music (no tapes). Before the performance, a beer garden opens in the castle garden, offering food from local partners.
Parsberg is located in the western part of the Neumarkt district in the Oberpfalz, on the A3 motorway between Regensburg and Nuremberg. The town has around 7,500 inhabitants. Visitors to the Burgspiele can easily combine their theatre evening with an overnight stay at the Romantik Hotel Hirschen or a day hike through the Schwarzes Laaber Valley.
The 44th season of Burgspiele Parsberg takes place from June 26 to July 24, 2026, in the castle garden. On the programme: "Dinner for One" (Le Dîner de cons) by Francis Veber – a French comedy about Pierre Brochant, who invites guests every week to a dinner where they bet on who can bring the most eccentric person. Until Pierre meets the tax official François Pignon, who lets everything spiral out of control.
The 39-year-old Nuremberg-based Florian Wein, artistic director of the award-winning OVIGO Theatre, is directing – his first production as the new artistic director of Burgspiele. With Florian Wein, fresh wind from the independent theatre scene comes to Parsberg, without breaking the forty-year tradition of Burgspiele.
The 10 performances are spread across Friday and Saturday evenings and one Thursday. Admission and beer garden from 6:00 PM, performance start at 8:30 PM, intermission approx. 30 minutes, end around 11:00 PM.
