About Breckerfelder Weihnachtsmarkt

A small but very popular Christmas market with almost 50 years of tradition: Since 1980, the centre of Breckerfeld has been transformed into an Advent square on the second weekend of Advent around the Protestant Jakobuskirche. Around 40 stalls from Breckerfeld businesses and charitable organisations, no carousel hustle and bustle, but a cultural focus: Advent choirs and Christmas songs are performed in and in front of the church. Lighting on the illuminated church tower, a spotlighted Christmas tree, mulled wine, potato pancakes, and bratwurst — the classic Advent atmosphere in the southwestern Ennepe-Ruhr district, with its own bus shuttle from Hagen and Ennepetal.

Breckerfeld — Hanseatic City in the Ennepe-Ruhr District

The Hanseatic City of Breckerfeld, with around 9,000 inhabitants in the Ennepe-Ruhr district, state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is one of the smallest Hanseatic cities in Germany — and lies on a plateau between Hagen, Ennepetal, and the Sauerland region. The former iron production has left its mark on the cityscape; the old market rights and the rural character shape the town today. The Protestant Jakobuskirche is the Romanesque-Gothic hall church from the 14th century — the visual centre of the old town.

45 Years of Tradition

The Breckerfeld Christmas Market has been held annually since 1980 on the second weekend of Advent — in 2026, probably from December 4th to 6th. The initiative of Stadtmarketing Breckerfeld has been carrying the festival since its inception, continuously supported by the voluntary commitment of citizens, associations, and church communities. Without carousel crowds and without an oversized event format, the market has developed into one of the most popular Christmas markets in the region, writes Stadtmarketing.

A Market with a Church Core

Unlike other Christmas markets, the concept here is culturally and religiously anchored. Local choirs — the Jakobuskirche cantorate, school choirs, brass choirs — give concerts in and in front of the church. Advent carol singing, devotions, and an open church offering shape the weekend. Those looking for the scent of candle wax, organ music, and a trumpet call from the church tower will find it here.

40 Stalls — Local Businesses and Associations

Around 40 stalls are spread around the Jakobuskirche and along the lower Schulstraße. Local businesses from Breckerfeld's retail sector, artists, craftspeople, and charitable organisations. Stalls with Advent wreaths, hand-carved wooden figures, felt products, candles, jams, teas, regional honey — and the organisations offer hot food and drinks, the proceeds of which benefit charitable causes.

Lighting and Atmosphere

The atmosphere is characterised by lighting decorations, an illuminated Christmas tree in the church square, and a selectively spotlit church nave. Visible from afar, the tower of the Jakobuskirche serves as a landmark — an image that many Breckerfeld residents associate with their city. Cold hands are warmed at the mulled wine stand, with baked apples, or at the campfire.

Arrival and Shuttle

To ensure the festival remains accessible beyond the city limits, buses from the Märkische Verkehrsgesellschaft, Ennepe-Ruhr-Verkehr, and Hagener Straßenbahn run more frequently during the market weekend. This allows Breckerfeld to be reached by public transport from the Ruhr area, the Hagen city area, and Ennepetal — without parking worries in the narrow old town.
