Winter wonder with light installations at the International Mill Museum Gifhorn
The International Mill Museum Gifhorn brings together around 16 original and reconstructed mills from all over the world on its grounds – including a French post mill, Dutch tower mills, a Russian Orthodox wooden church, and a complex of buildings that leads visitors from Europe through Asia to North America. In winter, the mills and paths become a stage for creative light installations, transforming the museum into an evening wonderland from January to March.
The 2026 edition focuses on a new, expanded parcours with additional light ideas. Walk-through light tunnels, illuminated mills, projected patterns on facades, and small interactive stations accompany the stroll. The staging changes every year, ensuring that repeat visitors discover something new.
Several gastronomic stands in the museum's village square cater to culinary needs: mulled wine, punch, bratwurst, potato pancakes, and sweet specialties. Seating and heating facilities invite visitors to linger. Those who take their time can spend two to three hours on the grounds.
Open Tue to Sun from sunset, usually between 5:00 PM and 8:30 PM. Admission Tue to Thu €11 for adults and €5 for children aged 4 to 11; Fri to Sun €13 and €6. Family tickets and special rates are available at muehlenlichter.de.
The BRAWO Group, a cooperative bank based in Braunschweig, is the main sponsor and namesake of Mühlenlichter. This aligns the event with the group's regional commitment to culture and tourism in Southern Lower Saxony. For Gifhorn, it is one of the most important event highlights of the dark season, attracting visitors from all over eastern Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Hamburg.
The parcours starts at the entrance and leads along all the museum's highlights. For 2026, the light designers have developed additional stations thematically linked to each mill – the Dutch mills are reflected in water light shows, and the Russian Orthodox church is illuminated in warm golden tones.
The visit lasts between one and a half to two hours, depending on your pace. Those who take breaks and eat and drink in the village square should plan for two to three hours.
