Cinema in the Church
St. Johanniskirche in Brandenburg an der Havel – a former monastery church with partially war-damaged structures – has been one of the most unusual venues for open-air culture in the state of Brandenburg for years. With its open-to-the-sky nave and restored walls, it forms an almost theatrical backdrop where the Brandenburger Sommerkino opens its season each year.
LED Wall Instead of Screen
Unlike classic open-air cinemas, the Brandenburger Sommerkino uses a large, rain-resistant LED video wall. This makes the format weather-independent: operations can continue even in light rain or wind. The image quality is high, and sound is delivered via professional audio equipment. The setting is complemented by open-air seating within the church.
Curated Programme
The Sommerkino is organised by event-theater e.V. The programme is curated and combines current arthouse films, German and international productions, as well as literary adaptations. The 2026 season begins on May 22nd with "Therapie für Wikinger", followed on June 1st–2nd by "Der Buchspazierer", on June 3rd–4th by "Die Geschichte vor dem kleinen Prinzen", and concludes on July 8th with "Boléro". A total of 14 screenings are planned; all begin at 8 PM.
Brandenburg Cultural Calendar
The Sommerkino is part of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel's broad summer programme – together with Bergfest, Hörspielwochenende, and DRØP Festival, it forms the cultural backbone of the city's summer. Those wishing to discover Brandenburg an der Havel as a culturally diverse medium-sized city between the Havel river and forests should include the Sommerkino in their visit.
