Augsburg Pride Established for Years
The Christopher Street Day Augsburg – CSD Augsburg for short – is one of the most important Pride events in Southern Germany. The organizer is the registered association Christopher Street Day Augsburg e.V., which has been working with a clear political agenda for years: the event is explicitly designed as a political demonstration, not just a party event. This approach distinguishes the Augsburg CSD from purely tourist Pride events elsewhere.
Political Parade and Königsplatz Street Festival
The main program consists of two parts: In the morning, the political parade through Augsburg's city center with floats, groups, associations, private individuals, political organizations, and supporters. Afterwards, the Street Festival at Königsplatz, Augsburg's central transport hub in front of the city theater. The stage program features speeches (politics, activism, community), live music, drag performances, and show acts; around Königsplatz, there are stands from LGBTQ+ associations, self-help organizations, counseling centers, and queer-friendly businesses.
CSD Talks and Accompanying Program
In the run-up to the main event, CSD Augsburg e.V. organizes a multi-week accompanying program: CSD Talks (discussion events on queer topics), the Queergarten series (LGBTQ+ beer garden format from May to September), the annual IDAHOBITA* event on May 17 (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia, Transphobia, and Asexuality-phobia), as well as other workshops and visibility initiatives.
Augsburg and Queer Visibility in Swabia
Augsburg, the third-largest city in Bavaria with around 300,000 inhabitants and the capital of the Swabia administrative region, has established itself as one of the most queer-friendly cities in Southern Germany in recent years. The city signed the Magnus Hirschfeld Federal Foundation Charter in 2018, and the municipal CSD receives political support from the city administration. For the queer community in Swabia – not only Augsburg but also Memmingen, Kempten, Donauwörth – the CSD date is the most important gathering point of the year.
