A Market with Bohemian Roots
The Bohemian Christmas Market at Weberplatz is Potsdam's most atmospherically unique Advent market. It recalls the history of the district: in 1751, at the initiative of Frederick the Great, Bohemian religious refugees settled here and founded the weaving settlement of Nowawes — today the Potsdam district of Babelsberg. Around Weberplatz and the Friedrichskirche, a district with its own culture, architecture, and a palpable Bohemian identity emerged. In 2026, the market celebrates its 26th edition.
Two Advent Weekends in 2026
Unlike the large, often commercial Christmas markets in the city center, the Bohemian Market deliberately limits itself to two Advent weekends: from Friday, November 27th, to Sunday, November 29th, 2026, and from Friday, December 4th, to Sunday, December 6th, 2026. The Friday evenings are "Mulled Wine Evenings" with extended opening hours — from 5 PM to 10 PM based on previous years. Saturdays, the market is open from 11 AM to 10 PM, and Sundays from 11 AM to 6 PM.
Stalls, Food, Concerts
On Weberplatz, you'll find stalls offering Bohemian specialties (Trdelnik, gingerbread, Bohemian sausages), traditional crafts (glass, ceramics, wood, jewelry), warm drinks (mulled wine, punch, Bohemian beer), and Advent decorations. The highlight of each edition is the Advent concert "Bohemian Shepherd's Mass" in the Friedrichskirche on the Saturday of the first weekend — November 28th, 2026, at 4:00 PM, with free admission. The Shepherd's Mass is one of the most characteristic musical forms of the Bohemian Baroque and is performed by various choirs and ensembles from Berlin-Brandenburg.
Babelsberg — From Weaving Village to District
Babelsberg is now one of the largest and most popular districts of Potsdam, an independent city in the state of Brandenburg. Weberplatz, with its small, often listed weavers' houses, marks the historical core of the former Nowawes. When the Schwibbögen (candle arches) and fairy lights illuminate the narrow streets in the evening, you can feel the district's Bohemian past even more directly than at any other time of year. The organizer is the Aktionsgemeinschaft Babelsberg, an association of traders and citizens dedicated to fostering community life in the district.
A Hidden Gem in Brandenburg's Advent
Those who wish to avoid the hustle and bustle of the grand Christmas magic at Bassinplatz and Sanssouci will find a quieter, more Christmassy alternative at Weberplatz — smaller, more personal, with live music from the Friedrichskirche and the unique atmosphere of a historic weaving district.
