Grand Sessions of the Carnival Clubs "Böhler Hängsching" and "Igg'lemer Bessem" in the Palatinate's High Carnival Town Böhl-Iggelheim
The Böhl-Iggelheim Carnival Clubs are among the most active in the Palatinate Fastnacht scene. In the municipality of Böhl-Iggelheim, which was formed in 1969 from the merger of the previously independent towns of Böhl and Iggelheim, the historically distinct carnival clubs have been preserved and continue to cherish their respective traditions.
The Carnival Club "Böhler Hängsching" in the Böhl district is one of the most traditional clubs in the Palatinate. The club's name comes from the Palatinate dialect and refers to a longish fruit or appendage – a humorous self-irony, as is common in Palatinate carnival clubs. Every year, the club hosts its grand sessions in the VT-Halle Böhl or other halls in the municipality. The program includes satirical speeches (Büttenreden) in the Palatinate dialect, dance performances by the club's own troupes, show dances, musical contributions, and the traditional council of eleven (Elferrat).
The Carnival Club "Igg'lemer Bessem" – freely translated as "Iggelheim Brooms" – represents the carnival tradition of the Iggelheim district. In 2026, the club is offering three grand sessions: on January 31st, February 7th, and February 14th, each held in the TSV-Halle Iggelheim. With satirical speeches, dance performances, show acts, and lively music, the Palatinate Fastnacht is celebrated in classic style.
The sessions are spread across three halls in the municipality:
The Palatinate Fastnacht differs from the Rhenish Carnival in its connection to the local dialect and village traditions. Speakers of the satirical speeches (Büttenredner) use Palatinate German, humorously incorporating local events and personalities, thereby preserving a linguistic and cultural tradition unique to the Palatinate. In Böhl-Iggelheim, with its approximately 11,000 inhabitants, Fastnacht is an important part of social life, and the sessions are often sold out weeks in advance.
The 2026 grand sessions continue the tradition of the Böhl-Iggelheim carnival clubs. "Böhler Hängsching" and "Igg'lemer Bessem" friendly compete for the favor of the carnival audience, offering a varied program on several evenings. The halls are festively decorated, the audience comes in costume, and contributes to the exuberant atmosphere with the traditional Palatinate "Helau." Advance ticket purchase is recommended.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in due course. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
