Sommerklänge in the Schweigegarten — Blomberg shows its cultural side

The Blomberger Sommerklänge are the most important open-air concert series in the town of Blomberg — the 'Nelkenstadt' (Carnation Town) in southern Lippe (Lippe district, Ostwestfalen). The venue is the Schweigegarten at Pideritplatz, directly at the foot of the historic town wall — an idyllic garden space that unfolds an intimate concert atmosphere, especially on late summer evenings.

Stylistic diversity — from Jazz to Comedy

The Sommerklänge do not follow a single genre but curate a deliberate stylistic diversity throughout the season. In previous years, the program has included:

• Jazz — Modern Jazz, Swing, classic trio format
• Soul and Pop — sometimes cover bands, sometimes original artists
• Country and Folk — singer-songwriters, Bluegrass elements
• Comedy and Readings — literary-musical programs

The 2024 opening, for example, was performed by Sharon & Philippe — Swing classics to sing along to, emotional soul, and modern pop interpretations.

Schweigegarten at Pideritplatz — the location

The Schweigegarten is one of Blomberg's special places: a small garden enclosed by walls at Pideritplatz, directly at the foot of the medieval town wall. Blomberg's historical substance — town wall, Blomberg Castle, Niederburg, old town — gives the place a special aura. On balmy summer evenings with the setting sun over the old walls, the typical Sommerklänge atmosphere unfolds.

In case of bad weather — Klosterkirche in Seligen Winkel

Since the Sommerklänge is an open-air format, a weather contingency plan is in place: in case of rain or cool weather, the concerts are moved to the Klosterkirche in Seligen Winkel — a late Gothic monastery complex in the immediate vicinity. The church acoustics suit Jazz and Soul differently than the garden — many visitors even appreciate this alternative.

Standard schedule of a Sommerklänge evening

• 7:30 PM: Admission to the Schweigegarten
• 8:00 PM: Concert start
• Intermission: approx. 30 minutes, with drinks and small snacks
• 10:00 PM: Concert end, social gathering

Blomberg — the Nelkenstadt

Blomberg (approx. 16,000 inhabitants) is one of Lippe's smaller but historically richest towns. The nickname 'Nelkenstadt' goes back to an old tradition of plant cultivation. Blomberg Castle, the town wall, the Niederburg, and the medieval town center form a well-preserved ensemble — the Sommerklänge use this backdrop to make the town's cultural identity visible.
