Five-day Bruchweiler Blesskerwe with Blessumzug, Straußbuwe, Felslandblaskapelle, and Kerweredd
The name "Blesskerwe" is region-specific and only common in a few Palatinate villages. In Palatinate dialect, "Bless" refers to a white blaze on a horse, a nod to the region's old horse markets and rural customs. This tradition is the origin of Bruchweiler-Bärenbach's unique Kerwe variant, with its own procession and rituals.
Friday evening marks the start with the "Blesskerwequetschekuchebackefreidach" – a typical Palatinate compound word that roughly translates to "Blesskerwe-plum-cake-baking-Friday." The Sportverein bakes plum cake from local Hauszwetschgen plums; the aroma fills the village, and the festival begins with a slice of warm cake and a glass of Federweißen (young wine). This tradition is unique in its form.
The highlight is the Blessumzug on Sunday at 1:30 PM. Led by the "Straußbuwe" – a group of young men in traditional costume carrying a festival pole (the "Strauß") adorned with ribbons and flowers – the procession winds through the village. The Straußbuwe are heirs to an old tradition: they represent the young, unmarried men of the village and symbolize vitality and fertility. The procession is the climax and the most visible expression of Bruchweiler's festival tradition.
Following the procession is the Kerweredd – a humorous and satirical festival speech in the Palatinate dialect. It takes aim at the past year's village events, often with sharp wit and intimate knowledge of all the mishaps, scandals, and romances. The Kerweredd is both tradition and a form of social self-affirmation.
The Felslandblaskapelle provides musical accompaniment from Saturday to Monday. This band, one of the traditional brass music ensembles of the Dahner Felsenland, creates the typical Kerwe atmosphere with polkas, marches, and folk tunes.
Bruchweiler-Bärenbach is located in the heart of the Dahner Felsenland, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve renowned as one of Germany's most scenic areas with its spectacular sandstone formations. Despite its small size, the village hosts one of the region's most distinctive Kerwen.
The Kerwe is organized by the municipality of Bruchweiler-Bärenbach together with the Straußbuwe and local clubs. Current program details are available on bruchweiler-baerenbach.de.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in advance. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
