Pre-Christmas wine festival of the Birkweiler Wine Seasons in festively decorated winegrowers' courtyards on the first weekend of Advent
With the concept of the Wine Seasons, the Birkweiler winegrowers have created a four-part event format that accompanies the most important turning points of the wine year. Following the spring-like Wine Spring and the summer Winegrower's Serving Series, the Wine Autumn of the young vintage follows in October – and in December, the Wine Winter concludes the cycle with a festive, pre-Christmas format.
The participating wineries decorate their courtyards for the weekend with fairy lights, fir green, straw bales, and fire pits. The atmosphere is deliberately atmospheric and contemplative – not a classic mulled wine market feeling, but a weekend of enjoyment where wine, architecture, and Advent atmosphere come together. Many courtyards open their historic interiors and tasting areas, so that cozy tastings can also take place in winter weather.
In addition to the classic top wines from Birkweiler – primarily Riesling, Weißburgunder, and Spätburgunder – winter specialties are the focus: high-quality mulled wine made from Birkweiler wines, white mulled wine, punch, sometimes sparkling wine cocktails. The menus feature Palatinate winter dishes such as Schäufele, Saumagen, Wurstsuppe, along with chestnuts, tarte flambée, cheese platters, and winter pastries such as Springerle, Spekulatius, and Palatinate Christmas cookies.
Guests stroll relaxed from courtyard to courtyard – the distances in the village center are short, signage and a joint festival plan help with orientation. Families, groups of friends, and wine clubs often use the weekend as a relaxed Advent outing; many overnight guests combine the Weinwinter with other Palatinate Christmas markets in Landau, Bad Bergzabern, or Annweiler.
The weekend of December 4 to 6, 2026, marks the first Advent and thus the classic start of the Christmas season in the Palatinate. The Birkweiler winegrowers prepare their courtyards in the days leading up to it – fairy lights are strung up, high tables and fire pits are set up, and mulled wine kettles are heated. The festival starts on Friday in the late afternoon, and on Saturday and Sunday, the courtyards are open all day.
The exact program for 2026, including a list of participating wineries and their individual opening hours, will be published by the organizer in the late autumn. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
