About Birkweiler Weinherbst 2026

The Birkweiler Weinherbst is the third of the four Birkweiler wine seasons and annually attracts wine lovers to the vintner courtyards of the Palatinate wine village in late autumn. Over a weekend at the end of October, Birkweiler wineries open their courtyards and present highlights of the wine year: young wines of the current vintage, Federweißer (partially fermented grape must), and Bitzler (a sweeter version of Federweißer) are served alongside regional culinary specialties. Birkweiler is located at the foot of the Kalmit massif in the heart of the Südliche Weinstraße and is known for its top vineyard sites like Kastanienbusch and Mandelberg. With its manageable character, personal encounters with the vintners, and the opportunity for wine hikes between the courtyards, the Weinherbst emphasizes an intimate, high-quality atmosphere rather than a large festival bustle.

The Birkweiler Wine Seasons in Autumn

Birkweiler has developed its own event concept with the "Wine Seasons" format: In spring (Weinfrühling), summer (Weinsommer with vintner bar series), autumn (Weinherbst), and winter (Weinwinter), the wineries open their courtyards on designated weekends. The Weinherbst is the festival of the young vintage: Federweißer, Bitzler, and the first fresh wines of the current harvest year are served here.

Top Vineyards at the Foot of the Kalmit

The Birkweiler vineyards are considered among the best in the Palatinate. The Birkweiler Kastanienbusch and Mandelberg produce Rieslings, white, and Pinot Noir wines of international renown – several VDP estates and ambitious family businesses are based here. During the Weinherbst, guests meet these vintners personally, often directly in the courtyard or at the bar, and can taste the young vintage.

Wine, Hiking, and Culinary Delights

Characteristic of the Weinherbst is its spatial distribution: the participating wineries are spread throughout the village and can be explored on foot. Many guests plan a stroll from one courtyard to another, complemented by hikes in the surrounding vineyards with views of the Pfälzerwald forest and the Rhine plain. Tastings include not only wine and Federweißer but also autumnal specialties – onion cake, tarte flambée, Palatinate sausages, chestnuts, and seasonal dishes from the courtyard kitchens.

Format and Atmosphere

The Birkweiler Weinherbst is deliberately not a classic large wine festival with a stage program, but a focused wine days event with an emphasis on quality, encounters, and enjoyment. The atmosphere is relaxed, familial, and suitable for wine connoisseurs as well as for guests who want to gather initial impressions of the new vintage in a relaxed atmosphere.

Birkweiler Weinherbst 2026 — edition 2026

On October 24th and 25th, 2026, the Birkweiler vintners will once again open their courtyards for the Weinherbst as part of the wine seasons. The focus will be on Federweißer and Bitzler from the freshly harvested 2026 vintage, complemented by the first young still wines. The participating wineries are spread throughout the village and can be explored on foot. Seasonal specialties such as onion cake, tarte flambée, Palatinate sausages, and chestnut dishes will also be served. Birkweiler presents itself as a quiet, quality-oriented wine village at the foot of the Kalmit – personal conversations with the vintners and insights into the autumn work are the appeal of the weekend.

The 2026 Weinherbst falls on the last weekend of October. Experience shows that this is an intensive period for Palatinate vintners: the main harvest has just been completed, the musts are fermenting in the cellars, and the first Federweißer is already ready to drink. The Birkweiler vintners use this date to give guests an impression of the character of the new vintage while simultaneously presenting the last wines from the previous year.

The exact program for 2026, including a list of participating wineries and individual opening hours, will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years.
