Frisian national holiday on the largest of the North Frisian Halligen
The Hallig Langeneß is the largest of the inhabited North Frisian Halligen — those flat, dike-free marsh islands that are regularly inundated during storm surges and on whose mounds the few inhabitants have built their homes. With its 18 mounds (Warften) and just around 100 residents (in the Nordfriesland district), it is also one of the inhabited Halligen where Frisian culture remains most immediately tangible. The annual Biikebrennen on February 21st is one of the rare occasions when the Hallig welcomes visitors — an event of quiet intensity.
The Biikebrennen was added to UNESCO's national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2014. The custom dates back to the 17th century: Originally, the wives of Frisian whalers lit fires on the shore to bid farewell to the men departing for sea in spring. Today, the Biike is the unofficial Frisian national holiday and marks the end of winter — it is celebrated on all Halligen, all North Sea islands, and in many mainland communities of North Frisia.
On Langeneß, the program begins in the afternoon with a kale supper (Grünkohlessen) at the Hallig's eateries — kale with Kassler (smoked pork), bratwurst, and pork jowl is an indispensable start. Towards evening, Hallig residents and their guests gather at the Biike site between Ketelswarft and Kirchwarft. At 7:00 PM, the fire is lit, an accordion plays, and Frisian songs are sung together. The atmosphere is distinctly more intimate than at the large mainland Biikes: no speeches, no microphones, no mulled wine stand — it's the Hallig residents among themselves, with the few visitors who have found their way to the Hallig.
Langeneß is only accessible by boat, by the historic narrow-gauge railway (train connection via the Hindenburg Causeway), or on foot through the mudflats (with a local guide) — the ferry has limited service in February. Those who want to attend the Biikebrennen should book accommodation on one of the mounds well in advance — there are only a few guesthouses, and contacting the tourist office beforehand is recommended.
Anyone who has experienced a Biike night on a Hallig understands something of the special way of life on the North Frisian mudflat coast — of the residents' connection to water and wind, of the importance of collective rituals in an isolated community. With only 100 inhabitants, the Biike on Langeneß feels like a family celebration to which you are invited.
On Saturday, February 21, 2026, the residents of Hallig Langeneß will light their Biike bonfire. The program follows the centuries-old tradition: in the afternoon and early evening, the Hallig eateries offer kale suppers (Grünkohlessen), around 7:00 PM residents and guests gather at the Biike site between Ketelswarft and Kirchwarft, the fire is lit, an accordion plays, and Frisian songs are sung together.
Those who want to be there should book accommodation in advance — February ferries have limited service, and rooms on the mounds are scarce.
