A small beer festival by the Museum Brewery at the Gold Mining Museum
Goldkronach in the Fichtel Mountains is one of Upper Franconia's most historically fascinating small towns. Gold was mined here from the Middle Ages to the 19th century — a tradition that the Gold Mining Museum commemorates in its magnificent historic building. Today, right next door, an association combines the town's old mining heritage with another Upper Franconian tradition: brewing beer.
The Goldkronach Museum Brewery Association (Museumsbrauerei Goldkronach e.V.) was founded in 2017 to establish a small show brewery alongside the Gold Mining Museum. Nearly 20 volunteers built a fully functional brewery in the museum's adjacent rooms. Today, the museum brewery produces about three to five hectoliters of beer five to six times a year — Pilsner, Lager, pale and dark specialties. These house brews are served at the beer festival in the museum garden.
The museum garden right by the Gold Mining Museum provides the ideal setting: a small lawn with beer garden tables, a stage for light live music, and a snack stand with Franconian grilled sausages and traditional platters. The format is intentionally kept manageable — no mass crowds, but a neighborhood festival with the association's own beer in a historically special environment. A typical Upper Franconian community festival: volunteer-run, regional, predictable — and with good beer.
Goldkronach is located in the Bayreuth district at the foot of the Fichtel Mountains, Bavaria's oldest low mountain range. Visitors to the beer festival can combine their day with a walk through the Gold Mining Museum, a hike up Goldberg mountain, or an exploration of the Fichtel Mountains Nature Park. In June 2026, the German Gold Panning Championships will also take place at the Infohaus on Goldberg mountain (June 26–28) — another opportunity to learn about the unusual history of this town.
The Goldkronach Museum Brewery Association (Museumsbrauerei Goldkronach e.V.) opens the museum garden at the Gold Mining Museum on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, from 6:00 PM for its beer festival. Founded and run by volunteers, the association regularly produces small batches of various beer styles in the museum's adjacent rooms — from pale Pilsner to dark specialties.
The house beers are served fresh from the tap at the stand, accompanied by Franconian grilled sausages, snack platters with regional specialties, and possibly light live music. A neighborhood summer festival in a historically special setting — right at the foot of the Fichtel Mountains, in the shadow of the Gold Mining Museum.
Detailed program items will be announced by the association in advance on the town's events page and through local notices. In case of rain, the festival will take place in the covered area of the museum.
Goldkronach is located about 15 km east of Bayreuth, on state road St2181 towards Bischofsgrün/Fichtelberg. By car, take the A9 (exit Bayreuth-Nord), then via Bindlach and Bad Berneck. By train, get off at DB station Bad Berneck, then take a bus or taxi. Parking is available in the town center and at the Gold Mining Museum.
Free admission to the museum garden. Beer and food are sold at the stand at festival prices. Starts at 6:00 PM.
On a sunny evening, take a stroll from the market square down to the museum and garden — a charming mix of industrial history (gold mining) and community hospitality. A tasting set with several beers from the house brewery is recommended. In case of rain, the festival usually takes place in the covered area of the museum.
