Traditional fair on Pentecost Wednesday in Biberach city center
The town of Biberach an der Riß (approx. 33,700 inhabitants, district town of the Biberach district) is located in Oberschwaben (Upper Swabia) — the hilly landscape between the Swabian Jura, the Danube, and Lake Constance. The town has a rich tradition as a trading, craft, and imperial city in the Holy Roman Empire. The Marktplatz (market square) in the historic old town, with its Baroque town hall from the 17th century, has been the venue for weekly and annual markets for centuries — and also the stage for the traditional Pfingstmarkt.
The Biberacher Pfingstmarkt takes place every year on the Wednesday after Pentecost — in 2026, this will be on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. Dates on a single weekday (instead of the weekend) are typical for the oldest South German market fairs: they follow the centuries-old tradition where the town's population and surrounding villages traditionally did their shopping. The market opens early — 7:00 a.m. — and ends in the late afternoon at 6:00 p.m.
The assortment is typical for a market fair: vendors from southern Baden-Württemberg, the Allgäu, and Upper Swabia present their goods in open stalls:
For children, there is the traditional children's carousel at the edge of the market — a bit like a step back in time, with wooden horses and small cars. For treats, the market offers roasted almonds, candied fruit (love apples), baked eggs, Swabian Maultaschen stands, bratwurst, and Allgäu cheese specialties. A low-threshold, traditional festive atmosphere that has been maintained in this form for centuries.
Pentecost is traditionally a particularly festive time in Biberach — also because of the famous Biberacher Schützenfest, which always begins a week later (a major Upper Swabian folk festival, a separate event). The Pfingstmarkt serves as the prelude to the festival season: market fair in the morning, preparations for the Schützenfest in the afternoon, and the big festival week the following weekend.
As every year on the Wednesday after Pentecost, the traditional market fair opens from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Biberach's old town. The stalls are set up early in the morning, and around 7 a.m., the first market visitors begin their shopping. The market can be explored throughout the day — perhaps combined with a stroll through the historic old town.
The market area includes the market square and the adjacent streets. Children will find the traditional children's carousel, and gourmets will enjoy the typical market scents: roasted almonds, candied fruit, Maultaschen, and Upper Swabian bratwurst.
