Over 60 stalls on Biberach's market square — Christkindles Post Office, daily stage program, and storybook Advent atmosphere in Upper Swabia
The Biberach Christkindles-Markt is one of Upper Swabia's most beautiful Christmas markets and is known beyond the region for its special atmosphere. On the central Marktplatz (market square) of the historic imperial city, an almost storybook-like Advent mood arises amidst the magnificent burgher houses, the town hall, and St. Martin's parish church. Here you'll experience a market that takes its time for its guests — manageable, high-quality, with the charm of an old imperial city.
In the Middle Ages, Biberach an der Riß was a wealthy free imperial city — the Marktplatz, with its elegant patrician houses from the 15th to 18th centuries, is reminiscent of this past. In the background is the late Gothic town hall with its stepped gable, next to it the towers of St. Martin's Parish Church — one of the few surviving simultaneum churches in Germany (used jointly by Catholics and Protestants). This backdrop, with the festively illuminated facades and the central Christmas tree, gives the Christkindles-Markt its unmistakable character.
Over 60 lovingly decorated stalls offer a selected assortment: arts and crafts from Upper Swabia (wood, glass, ceramics, felt, wool), Upper Swabian baked goods such as Swabian Bredle (cookies) and wood-fired oven bread, Dinnete (Upper Swabian Flammkuchen from a wood-fired oven), mulled wine variations (classic, white, berry, apple), punch, gingerbread, roasted almonds, bratwurst, Maultaschen, Käsespätzle. There are also stalls with jewelry, natural cosmetics, leather goods, and gift items. Stall allocation is handled by a city commission — which ensures quality.
A Biberach specialty: the Christkindles Post Office in the town hall. Here, children can drop off their wish lists to the Christkind — each child receives a personal reply. A tradition that holds a special place in the market. In addition, there is a special children's program every Wednesday with craft activities, theater performances, and storytelling. St. Nicholas visits the market personally on December 6th — with small surprises for the children.
On the market stage, there is a daily stage program with performances by local school choirs, church choirs, brass quintets, trombone choirs, and solo musicians. Concert highlights are often the Sunday evening concerts in St. Martin's Parish Church, featuring the Biberach Boys' Choir and other regionally renowned ensembles.
The former free imperial city of Biberach an der Riß, with around 33,000 inhabitants, is located in southern Upper Swabia, between Lake Constance, Ulm, and Sigmaringen. The Wieland Museum (Christoph Martin Wieland was from Biberach) and the medieval townscape attract visitors all year round — especially during the Advent season. The Christkindles-Markt is a magnet for families from the Allgäu, Upper Swabia, and Switzerland.
The Biberach Christkindles-Markt 2026 opens on November 28 and closes on December 13, 2026 — a classic Upper Swabian Advent format between the first and third Sundays of Advent. The approximately 60 stalls frame the market square. In the center stands the central Christmas tree, with St. Martin's Parish Church and the town hall festively illuminated in the background.
Stall sales remain the focus: arts and crafts from Upper Swabia, Upper Swabian baked goods, Dinnete from the wood-fired oven, Swabian specialties, and mulled wine variations. The Christkindles Post Office in the town hall accepts children's wish lists — a tradition with special charm.
