Six concerts on the baroque Wagner/Kern organ from 1723 in Berlin's oldest parish church
The Wagner/Kern organ at St. Marienkirche, dating from 1723, is one of the last surviving baroque keyboard instruments in Berlin. Joachim Wagner, the most important organ builder in the Brandenburg-Prussian region of the 18th century, created around forty instruments in his workshop – few have survived the ravages of time, World War II, and the GDR era. The St. Marien organ was extensively restored in 2002 under the direction of the Alsatian organ builder Daniel Kern, returning it to its original sound.
In its 4th year in 2026, the Berlin Organ Summer will feature six concerts on Thursday evenings in July and August (plus a special concert), showcasing a deliberately diverse repertoire: Bach in historically informed performance practice, German and French Romanticism (Mendelssohn, Reger, Franck, Widor), contemporary works, and improvisations. One soloist performs at each concert – international guests alongside Berlin's main performers, such as Kilian Nauhaus, the church musician of St. Marien.
St. Marienkirche was built in the 13th century and is Berlin's second-oldest parish church, after the now-defunct Nikolaikirche. It is located directly on Alexanderplatz, beneath the Berlin TV Tower – one of Berlin's most prominent inner-city locations. Famous features include the late Gothic *Dance of Death wall frieze* (c. 1469) and Andreas Schlüter's pulpit (1703). The church belongs to the Evangelical parish of St. Marien-Friedrichswerder and is one of the few original, preserved medieval large churches in Berlin's Mitte district.
The 4th edition of the Organ Summer once again uses Thursday evenings in July and August for a concert series centered around one of Berlin's most valuable baroque keyboard instruments. All concerts start at 7 PM in St. Marienkirche at Alexanderplatz. Program focus 2026: Bach, German and French Romanticism, contemporary works.
