The largest showcase of the Bavarian theatre scene, held every two years in a different location
Since 1983, the Bavarian Theatre Days have travelled through the Free State every one to two years, bringing together the top productions from its public and independent stages. An expert jury – directors, dramaturges, theatre critics – selects the most striking works from the submitted productions, which then perform in a city over two to three festival weeks. The spectrum ranges from drama and musical theatre to dance, performance, and youth theatre, as well as digital and interdisciplinary formats.
In 2026, the Theatre Days will return to Regensburg for the fifth time. The event is organised by the Theater Regensburg in cooperation with the Bavarian State Association for Independent Performing Arts. The anniversary coincides with a historic moment for the city: on May 8, 2026, the opening day, the Theater Regensburg will be officially elevated to the sixth state theatre in Bavaria as part of a celebratory ceremony – an opening and elevation ceremony combined.
The 2026 Theatre Days will take over the whole of Regensburg: the Theater am Bismarckplatz with its Great House, Velodrom, and Haidplatz, the Antoniushaus, the Junge Theater, the stages of the Akademie der Darstellenden Kunst, and the Turmtheater. The festival deliberately does not have a single festival venue but becomes a city experience – those who come with a festival pass will traverse Regensburg from the Old Town to the banks of the Danube.
Seven people form the selection jury: Barbara Bily (Director of Drama, Mainfranken Theater Würzburg), Katharina Denk (Dramaturge), Walter Heun (Chairman, Bavarian State Association for Contemporary Dance), Dr. Manfred Jahnke (Theatre Scholar), Sebastian Ritschel (Intendant, Theater Regensburg), Thomas Schwarzer (German Theatre Association), and Franziska Stürz (Opera Critic, BR-Klassik). In 2026, 62 productions from 28 city and state theatres and 14 independent ensembles applied.
The Bavarian Theatre Days are not a competition with prizes, but a showcase: for theatre managements, programmers, associations, and the interested public. Anyone who is in Regensburg during the three weeks will get a condensed cross-section of what matters on stage in Bavaria. For theatre enthusiasts from all over Germany and Austria, the festival is one of the most important dates in May.
The 40th Bavarian Theatre Days will take place from May 8 to 24, 2026, in Regensburg. Motto of the anniversary edition: "Living Diversity".
26 productions from all over Bavaria have been selected by the seven-person jury – from a total of 62 applications from 28 city and state theatres and 14 independent ensembles. The spectrum includes drama, musical theatre, youth theatre, dance, performance, digital theatre, and interdisciplinary formats.
The festival will open on Friday, May 8, 2026, with a ceremonial act that also marks the official elevation of the Theater Regensburg to the sixth state theatre in Bavaria – a historic moment for the city and the festival. The venues will be the Theater Regensburg (Great House, Velodrom, Haidplatz), the Antoniushaus, the Junge Theater, the stages of the Akademie der Darstellenden Kunst, and the Turmtheater.
