Large Regional Market on German Unity Day in the Maintal Valley
The Bauernmarkt Gädheim is one of the most traditional and largest regional market events in the Bavarian district of Haßberge (Lower Franconia, State of Bavaria). It takes place every year firmly on October 3rd, German Unity Day – a perfect blend of national holiday and regional harvest festival character. The entire village center of Gädheim becomes a market stage: more than 100 stalls line the main street and side streets around the church.
The offerings are diverse and regionally focused: culinary specialties of the region (sausage, cheese, honey, beer, wine, farmer's bread), seasonal fruits and vegetables directly from the producer, pottery and woodwork, arts and crafts, decorative items, regional books, plants, and herbs. With around 10,000 visitors from the entire Maintal Valley, the Haßberge region, and beyond, the Bauernmarkt Gädheim is one of the most visited one-day markets in Lower Franconia.
The market is officially integrated into the nationwide initiative Tag der Regionen, which focuses on regional products, short supply chains, and sustainable consumption every year around October 3rd. The farmers' market is organized by Haßberge Tourismus e.V. in close cooperation with the municipality of Gädheim and local associations.
Gädheim is a small municipality with around 1,500 inhabitants directly on the Main River between Schweinfurt and Haßfurt, at the transition from the Maintal Valley to the Haßberge hills. Its location on the river, the surrounding vineyards of the Steigerwald forest, and its rural character make the journey to the farmers' market an excursion in itself. Those arriving by bike can use the MainRadweg (Main River Cycle Path).
The farmers' market falls on a public holiday, making it ideal for family outings, day-trippers from Würzburg, Schweinfurt, Bamberg, and the wider region. Food stalls offering Bratwurst, Sauerkraut, cabbage rolls, and sweet specialties ensure culinary delights. Live music and small cultural performances round off the market day.
In 2026, the center of Gädheim will once again transform into a large farmers' and craft market on Saturday, October 3rd. The main street and side streets around the church will be lined with more than 100 market stalls: regional sausage and cheese specialties, honey from the Haßberge, Franconian wine from Steigerwald, bread from a wood-fired oven, seasonal fruits and vegetables directly from the producer, as well as pottery, woodwork, and arts and crafts.
Bratwurst, cabbage rolls, Sauerkraut, and sweet specialties will cater to culinary desires, while live music and small cultural performances will frame the market day. The event is part of the nationwide "Tag der Regionen" campaign, which focuses on regional products and short supply chains every year around October 3rd.
