Rocking like Vikings in the Viking Land Haddeby
The Baltic Open Air is one of Northern Germany's most atmospheric rock festivals. It takes place every August in the Viking Land Haddeby – a reconstructed Viking settlement in the municipality of Busdorf, directly on the Haddebyer Noor and just a few kilometers from Schleswig. Its location in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, Schleswig-Holstein's northernmost district, lends the festival a unique atmosphere: you'll dance to Rock, Metal, and German Rock against a backdrop of thatched-roof houses, longships, and Viking reenactors.
Every year, around twenty bands from the Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Folk Metal, and German Rock genres perform on stage. Headliners in past years included Eisbrecher, Saltatio Mortis, Axel Rudi Pell, and Hämatom. Emerging bands from the North also get their chance on the big stage.
What sets the Baltic Open Air apart from other rock festivals is its close connection to Viking culture. On the grounds, you'll find:
Under the motto "Rocken wie die Wikinger" (We will rock like the Vikings), the festival combines three days of live music with a historically inspired staging. Cashless payment throughout the grounds makes festival life relaxed.
The Baltic Open Air is an important date in the event calendar of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, attracting visitors from all over Germany and Scandinavia. Its proximity to the Danish border and the city of Schleswig makes the festival a cross-border meeting point for the Rock and Metal scene.
From August 20th to 22nd, 2026, the Viking Land Haddeby will transform for the 12th time into a fortress stage for Rock and Metal fans. Several thousand visitors from all over Northern Germany, Scandinavia, and Denmark are expected.
The festival kicks off on Thursday with the warm-up and arrival day. Starting at 4:00 PM, the first bands will play on the main stage, the Viking village will open its gates, and the Ferris wheel will spin above the heads of the festival community.
Exact performance times will be announced by the organizer at a later date.
