About Master Concerts Bad Schmiedeberg

In the festival hall of the Kurhaus Bad Schmiedeberg, an ornate concert hall from the early 20th century, the Rotta Cultural Association has been hosting its Master Concerts for years. A small but fine classical series with seven concerts between March and November, bringing internationally renowned soloists and ensembles to the Wittenberg district. In 2023, a new Förster grand piano was acquired, giving the hall its special sound.

Bad Schmiedeberg — Spa town with a concert hall

Bad Schmiedeberg is located in the Wittenberg district, on the southwestern edge of the Dübener Heide, about 30 km northeast of Halle (Saale). The small town is recognized as an iron moor spa and traditionally operates a spa business. At its center is the Kurhaus with its representative festival hall — a room for up to 363 guests with excellent acoustics and a richly ornamented stucco ceiling.

The fact that this hall is not just for spa guests is thanks to the Förderverein zur Kultur- und Denkmalpflege Rotta e.V. (Rotta Cultural and Monument Preservation Association), which has been programming the Bad Schmiedeberg Master Concerts here for years. Seven concerts between March and November, all in the afternoon at 3:00 PM, bring piano chamber music, string chamber music, and song recitals to the spa town of Wittenberg. The patronage is traditionally held by the District Administrator of the Wittenberg district.

Förster Grand Piano and Top Soloists

In 2023, the previous Steinway was replaced by a new Förster grand piano from the traditional manufactory in Löbau. The instrument is tuned to the hall and gives the series its own unique sound character. Programmatically, the series alternates between classical piano greats — in 2026, for example, Susanne Grützmann with Schubert and Schumann on April 5 — and chamber music ensembles such as the Aperto Piano Quartet (Mozart, Dvořák, June 7).

Concerts between Brahms and Shostakovich

The 2026 opening on March 8 is dedicated to Brahms, Bruch, and Shostakovich — a program for Viola da Braccio and piano. In May, Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes follow. The series concludes in autumn with harpsichord chamber music and a season finale concert. Admission is €25 per concert, seats are easily accessible, and during the intermission, the in-house patisserie offers coffee and cake.

Bad Schmiedeberg and the Dübener Heide

Anyone combining a concert with a day trip can explore the spa gardens, hike in the Dübener Heide, or visit the nearby Lutherstadt Wittenberg (30 km). In summer, the iron moor spa with its swimming pool and sauna landscape is an attractive addition — spa and concert traditions go hand in hand here.

Master Concerts Bad Schmiedeberg — edition 2026
