Traditional Advent market in the historic spa town on the edge of the Harz
Bad Gandersheim, the birthplace of the medieval poet Roswitha of Gandersheim, presents itself in its most beautiful guise during Advent. The Christmas market transforms the historic town centre into a festive Advent landscape, dominated by the scent of mulled wine, Christmas music, and the warm light of the festive illuminations.
The collegiate church, one of the oldest sacred buildings in Northern Germany, and the half-timbered houses of the old town form the backdrop for the market. The medieval city history is palpable everywhere, and the market blends harmoniously into this historic environment.
At the market, visitors will find the classic offerings of a high-quality Christmas market: mulled wine, punch, cocoa, bratwurst, potato pancakes, crêpes, candied almonds, gingerbread, and much more. Arts and crafts stalls offer handmade gift ideas, Christmas tree decorations, candles, and festive home accessories.
Numerous events take place throughout the market period: performances by choirs, kindergartens, and schools, concerts by regional music groups, visits from St. Nicholas, and craft activities for children. The spa town atmosphere and the familiar size of the market make every visit a feel-good experience.
2026 is the Roswitha Festival year in Bad Gandersheim – the annual programme in honour of the medieval poet Roswitha of Gandersheim. The Christmas market will set special accents in this context, combining the town's literary tradition with the Advent spirit.
Bad Gandersheim is scenically located on the western edge of the Harz mountains. Visitors to the Christmas market can combine their day with a walk in the spa gardens or a city tour through the historic old town. A combination with a visit to Goslar, Wernigerode, or other Advent destinations in the Harz is also possible.
The exact dates for the 2026 edition will be announced shortly by the city of Bad Gandersheim. Traditionally, the market takes place in December — usually on several weekends before Christmas.
In the context of the 2026 Roswitha Festival year, the market will feature additional cultural accents that combine the town's literary tradition with the Advent spirit.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the organiser in the autumn. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
