Grand Christmas Market of Cochem's City Centre from the 1st Advent until just before Christmas Eve
The Moselle is a tourist hotspot in summer, but the Cochem Christmas Market shows that the town also unfolds its charm in winter. From the first Advent weekend until just before Christmas Eve, Cochem's city centre becomes a continuously active festival area during the Advent season, counting among the largest and most beautiful Christmas markets on the Middle Moselle. The combination of historic old town architecture, illuminated half-timbered facades, the Reichsburg castle in the background, and a dense market dramaturgy creates a setting that attracts thousands of guests from Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France anew each year.
The market is primarily spread across the Marktplatz and Endertplatz. The Marktplatz presents the classic scene with a large Christmas tree, wooden stalls, a carousel, and a small stage. The Endertplatz often features a larger marquee where concerts are held on weekends. Between the two squares, additional stalls are distributed along the alleys, so a market stroll leads through the entire old town. The offerings are classic: arts and crafts, Advent decorations, waxed fir branches, jewellery, candles, nativity figures, regional foods from honey to wine to gingerbread, plus mulled wine, punch, non-alcoholic hot drinks, bratwurst, fries, lard bread, roasted almonds, crepes, and waffles.
Opening hours vary throughout the season. The market is fully operational on the four Advent weekends, often with a slightly reduced selection of stalls during the week, but still open. The lighting is activated daily in the late afternoon; the illuminated wooden huts against the backdrop of Cochem's old town are among the most photographed Advent motifs on the Moselle. Admission is free. Those wishing to stay overnight should book in advance – Cochem's hotels are well-booked during the Advent season.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the city of Cochem in late autumn. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: opening on the first Advent Saturday, continuous market operation for six weeks, stage programme with choirs, brass bands, bands, and family events on the four Advent weekends, lighting daily in the late afternoon, market closing on December 21 in the late evening.
