Traditional Kerwe in the Annweiler district of Queichhambach, named after the wagtail since 1995
The Bachstelzkerwe is the traditional village Kerwe in the Annweiler district of Queichhambach. From August 7th to 9th, 2026, the small village on the banks of the Queich will transform into a Palatinate festival ground with catering, live music, and three days of Kerwe atmosphere. Since 1995, the Kerwe has borne its name after the wagtail – the bird native to the Queich riverbanks.
Queichhambach is one of Annweiler's districts and is located at the entrance of the Annweiler basin, directly on the banks of the Queich. The Kerwe is part of the annual festival calendar of Annweiler's districts and is in line with the Bindersbach and Gräfenhausen Kerwen, which also take place year after year.
Since 1995, the Kerwe in Queichhambach has officially been called Bachstelzkerwe. The wagtail – a small songbird particularly native to riverbanks – has become a symbol of the village on the Queich. The name change was part of the identity development of the Annweiler district and gave the traditional village Kerwe a distinctive profile.
The Bachstelzkerwe follows the classic Palatinate Kerwe choreography: keg tapping on Friday, dance evening on Saturday, morning pint with brass music on Sunday. A festival tent, drinks stands, a stage, and food stalls characterize the festival grounds. Palatinate specialties – Saumagen, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, Flammkuchen – complement the gastronomic offerings. Draft beer and wine from Annweiler and Gräfenhausen vintners are served at the stands.
In the evenings, live bands, DJs, and Palatinate dialect music create the atmosphere. The Kerwe is a meeting point for the residents of Queichhambach and visitors from the Annweiler area. The familiar atmosphere of the small district shapes the festival – a typical Palatinate village festival without tourist pressure, with concentrated charm.
Queichhambach is located at the eastern entrance of the Annweiler basin, at the transition from the Südliche Weinstraße to the Wasgau. Its location on the Queich, the view of the Trifels-Anebos-Scharfenberg castle chain, and its proximity to Annweiler's town center make the district a quiet location on the edge of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park.
