Wine hike along the characteristic Bänkelches-Route through the Siefersheim vineyards with winegrower stands
Siefersheim is a small wine-growing community with around 1000 inhabitants in western Rheinhessen, part of the Wöllstein administrative district. The village is primarily known for its 'Buntsandstein' (colored sandstone) vineyard sites, which offer special conditions for dry, mineral Rieslings, making Siefersheim one of Rheinhessen's outstanding wine locations. Several top wineries are based here. The Bänkelches-Route is a permanently marked hiking trail that leads through the vineyards and is equipped with numerous benches at special viewpoints – an invitation to pause and enjoy the expansive landscape.
The wine hike traditionally takes place on the last Sunday in September – a date chosen deliberately: the grape harvest is usually completed or in full swing, the vineyards are showing their autumnal golden hues, the days are still warm enough for extended hikes, and at the same time, the wine still retains the freshness of summer. The late September date makes the hike one of the last major outdoor wine events of the season.
At several stations along the route, Siefersheim's winegrowers serve their wines. Riesling is naturally the focus – Siefersheim Rieslings are considered among the best in Rheinhessen and are regularly awarded in wine guides. In addition, there are Silvaner, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, and Rosé. The stations are placed so that wine, hiking, and lingering on the benches combine into a harmonious rhythm.
Small dishes are available at the stations: sausages, cheese platters, 'Spundekäs' (a creamy cheese dip), bread with homemade spreads. Unlike large wine festivals with marquees and concert stages, here there is a quiet, almost meditative atmosphere. Hikers move in small groups along the paths, meet at the stations for a glass, linger on the benches, and enjoy the view. Those seeking a particularly intimate and quality-oriented wine hiking day will find it here.
