City, Słubice, and University Celebrate

The AStA Summer Festival of Europa-Universität Viadrina is one of Germany's most unusual student festivals — and at the same time one of the most inclusive. Instead of retreating to the campus and organizing an isolated student event, the student representatives (AStA, StuPa) consciously open up to the city: The festival takes place right in the city center, on the traffic-calmed Große Scharrnstraße, and is explicitly aimed at students, citizens, and residents of the twin city Słubice. The goal: to connect Frankfurt (Oder), Słubice, and Viadrina — a neighborhood student festival that showcases the university as part of the city.

Sporty and Family-Friendly Kick-off in the Afternoon

The afternoon program starting at 3:00 PM marks the beginning. Sports activities dominate — Jugger (a mix of handball and hockey, particularly popular among students), foosball tournaments, slacklining (balancing ropes between trees), XXL darts, table tennis. Face painting and small craft activities appeal to families. Various initiatives from the city and the university — from Blue Fangs (Viadrina's ice hockey club) to the StadtSportBund Frankfurt and student university groups — present themselves at stalls.

Musical Evening Program

Music takes over from the late afternoon. Two main acts are announced: TEN SING, the musical format of the CVJM (Christian Association of Young People), a German a cappella band with a pop and gospel repertoire, and Deluzja, a Polish alternative band working with experimental genres and multilingual lyrics. The mix of German a cappella tradition and Polish indie avant-garde reflects the festival's German-Polish ambition and makes the lineup a statement: university on the border, together, multilingual, culturally open.

Vegan Gastronomy and WG-Bar / Kukuryku

A special feature is the culinary focus. Instead of classic bratwurst stands, there is a strong vegan component — waffles, cotton candy, vegetarian and vegan grill offerings — appealing to the student clientele. The WG-Bar and Kukuryku, two popular student bars in Frankfurt (Oder) at the ends of the festival mile, sell their drinks outside the bar — beer, cocktails, sodas. Student prices, free admission, atmosphere like a Münster university festival, but on the Oder.

Viadrina and Frankfurt-Słubice

Europa-Universität Viadrina, re-founded in 1991 as a German-Polish bridge university, currently has around 6,000 students and is one of the most important institutions for German-Polish understanding in Europe. The main campus is located in Frankfurt (Oder), but the university maintains close ties with the Polish twin city Słubice — the Collegium Polonicum on the Polish side is a joint institution of Viadrina and Adam Mickiewicz University Poznań. Visitors to the AStA Summer Festival should definitely cross the Oder bridge to Słubice — the city with the Slubfurt art border crossing is an experience in itself.
