Tower run competition on the highest church tower in Lower Saxony – 364 steps, 114.5 meters altitude gain
At 114.5 meters, the Andreasturm is the highest church tower in Lower Saxony and shapes the skyline of Hildesheim. St. Andreas Church, in the center of which it stands, is one of the city's main churches and has a varied history: severely damaged in World War II, it was rebuilt in the post-war period. The tower itself has been rebuilt several times and is now a central landmark of the city.
The Andreasturm Challenge uses the impressive 364 steps for a sporting competition: participants start at the foot of the tower and run against the clock to the viewing platform. The competition is not for those afraid of heights, but it is a challenge for endurance, leg strength, and lung capacity. Stair runs have established themselves internationally as their own sports discipline, with competitions in skyscrapers in New York, Hong Kong, or Frankfurt – the Andreasturm Challenge brings this format to Hildesheim in a historically and architecturally unique variant.
Usually, several start groups are formed: men and women in different age categories, juniors, and possibly a team competition. This ensures that every participant has a fair basis for comparison. The fastest runners complete the 364 steps in well under two minutes; for most amateur participants, a target time of three to five minutes is realistic.
A small festival atmosphere is created around the Andreasturm for the event: warm-up zone, catering points with water and snacks, award ceremonies, small stage performances. Even those who don't run themselves can experience the competition as spectators and subsequently visit the tower – for an entrance fee.
Anyone who reaches the top – whether as a competitor or a regular tower visitor – experiences a view that is unparalleled in Lower Saxony: a panorama over the historic Hildesheim city center with the Mariendom and the market square, over the Innerste floodplain, and out to the hills of Hildesheimer Wald and Sieben Berge. This view is particularly beautiful in the late summer light of late September.
The Andreasturm Challenge is one of the newer sports formats in the Hildesheim event calendar, combining sporting competition with the visibility of one of the city's iconic landmarks. It is conceived by Hildesheim Marketing GmbH and implemented together with sports and running initiatives.
As with all stair runs, a certain basic fitness is required. Those who train stairs regularly or run medium distances will be well prepared. Registration is done through the official organizer channels.
The program on-site is complemented by a warm-up zone, catering points, and award ceremonies. Spectators are also welcome.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
