About Alzeyer Fastnachtsumzug

The Alzeyer Fastnachtsumzug is one of the largest carnival parades in Rheinhessen and, with approximately 15,000 expected visitors, 1,200 participants, and 60 groups, it is the biggest carnival event in the Volkerstadt. Along a route several kilometers long through Alzey's city center, floats, dance groups, music bands, walking groups, and carnival societies parade through the streets with the traditional cry "Alzey Helau". The 2026 edition is particularly noteworthy: for the first time, the City of Alzey is organizing the parade independently, taking responsibility for one of the most defining city festivals of the year.

The Alzeyer Fastnachtsumzug is a major event in the Rheinhessen carnival calendar. With around 15,000 expected visitors, 1,200 participants, and about 60 groups, it transforms the city center of the Volkerstadt into a jubilant festival mile on Carnival Sunday.

2026: First independent organization by the City

The 2026 edition marks a turning point: for the first time, the parade is being organized independently by the City of Alzey. The city is thus taking direct responsibility for one of the most defining city festivals of the year – a clear signal of the importance of Fastnacht as a civic cultural asset.

Route through the City Center

The parade route leads through the historic city center: Am Damm → Weinrufstraße → Berliner Straße → Obere Schanzenstraße → Rodensteiner Straße → Raugrafenstraße → Ostdeutsche Straße → Klosterstraße → Hospitalstraße → An der Zehntscheune → Löwengasse → Augustinerstraße → Obermarkt. A route several kilometers long that integrates the entire cityscape and ends at one of the central festival areas.

Floats, Dance Groups, Music Bands

The 60 groups include the Alzeyer Carneval Gesellschaft (ACG) and all other Alzey carnival formations, dance groups, marching bands, music clubs, schools, and associations. The floats are elaborately decorated and address current topics from politics, society, and the region – a classic element of every Rhineland-Palatinate carnival parade.

Three Merry Days

The Fastnachtsumzug is the highlight of the "dolle Tage" (merry days) in Alzey, which begin with the children's parade on Thursday and the ACG's gala session on Saturday. Thus, Sunday fits into a whole festive week that keeps the city in a carnival frenzy.

Significance for the City

Beyond the purely carnival aspect, the Fastnachtsumzug has enormous economic and identity-forming significance for Alzey. Gastronomy, retail, and hotels benefit, and the city community experiences a day that radiates far beyond the event location.
