Christmas market at the foot of Altenberg Cathedral
As dusk falls on the second Advent Friday in Odenthal-Altenberg, hundreds of fairy lights illuminate the market stalls at Eugen-Heinen-Platz. From December 4th to 6th, 2026, the Altenberger Christmas Market will take place here on the traditional date of the second Advent weekend. The backdrop: Altenberg Cathedral, the late Gothic Cistercian monastery from the 13th century, one of the most significant ecclesiastical buildings in the Bergisches Land region.
As in previous years, the market opens at the classic times:
In 2026, Sunday falls on St. Nicholas Day — a fitting date for the traditional visit from St. Nicholas.
The stalls offer regional Bergisches Crafts: wood carvings, glass art, nativity figures, pottery, felt, wool products, jewelry. Culinary offerings range from mulled wine to Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), bratwurst, and Bergische waffles, to gingerbread, almonds, and hot apple punch. Several stalls feature nativity art and Advent decorations for the home gift table.
On Saturday and Sunday, St. Nicholas visits the market — usually in the late afternoon, without an exact scheduled time. Children receive small bags, and waiting times are shortened by a children's carousel and craft activities. Those who arrive early have a better chance of seeing St. Nicholas.
The Christmas market is located in the narrow Dhünntal valley; direct parking in Altenberg itself is very limited. Therefore, there is a well-established shuttle bus system: continuous connections from the parking lots at the Odenthal school center, at Schöllerhof, and from the surrounding villages of Blecher, Holz, and Menrath. The fare is €2 per ride, with proceeds supporting local community projects. This way, you avoid traffic jams and can enjoy your mulled wine in peace.
Altenberg Cathedral is the former Cistercian monastery church, built from 1259 onwards, and has been jointly used by the Catholic parish of Altenberg and the Protestant Cathedral community since 1857 — a symbol of ecumenical tradition in the Rhineland. During the market, spiritual concerts and readings inside the cathedral invite a break from the hustle and bustle. Dates are published by the Altenberg Cathedral community.
The municipality of Odenthal is located in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis district, just 20 kilometers northeast of Cologne. The Dhünntal valley, with its forests, streams, and the striking cathedral ensemble, is one of the most visited excursion destinations around Cologne and Leverkusen.
At the foot of Altenberg Cathedral, the Christmas market opens from December 4th to 6th, 2026. Three days of Bergisches Advent tradition with mulled wine, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), wood carvings, and nativity figures. As direct parking is limited, a shuttle bus runs from the outer parking lots for €2 per ride.
