Friends of Altenberger Dom Association
The Friends of Altenberger Dom Association (Förderverein Altenberger Dom e.V.) organizes the Monastery Market and is also the main supporter of concerts, readings, and guided tours at Altenberger Dom. For decades, the association has funded restorations, organ concerts, and the extensive event program around the cathedral. Membership and donations enable the preservation of one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in the Rhineland. Current program and member information at altenbergerdom.de.
Altenberger Dom — The Romanesque-Gothic Backdrop
The Altenberger Dom is the former monastery church of the Cistercian Abbey of Altenberg, built from 1259 and completed in 1379. After secularization in 1803, the monastery fell into disrepair, until King Frederick William IV of Prussia financed its reconstruction in 1857 — with the condition that Catholic and Protestant Christians would use the church simultaneously. This ecumenical tradition makes the cathedral a special symbol of Christian reconciliation in the Rhineland. Architecturally, it is a masterpiece of High Gothic with large pointed arch windows, a bright interior, and famous acoustics used for classical concerts for decades.
Eugen-Heinen-Platz and Monastery Complex
Eugen-Heinen-Platz is located directly at the foot of the cathedral and is named after the first mayor of the municipality of Odenthal-Altenberg. During the Monastery Market, the square is filled with market stalls and small booths. The adjacent monastery garden and the former abbots' house also invite visitors — forming a historic ensemble with former outbuildings, the Cathedral Inn, and the famous Altenberger Bischofsmühle mill.
Odenthal-Altenberg — Bergisches Land Beyond the Gates of Cologne
The municipality of Odenthal is located in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis district, about 20 kilometers northeast of Cologne. The Dhüntal valley, with its forests, streams, and the striking cathedral ensemble, is one of the most visited excursion destinations around Cologne and Leverkusen. In addition to the Monastery Market, the annual Altenberger Christmas Market (early December), numerous cathedral concerts, and hiking events take place here.
