Tip
If you're going to Alt-Marzahn anyway, you can also visit the nearby Marzahn Local History Museum or take a short walk to the Marzahn post mill. When it snows, the village green is one of the most atmospheric Christmas market locations in Berlin.
Alt-Marzahn – the village side of Berlin
Anyone who only knows Marzahn as a large GDR housing estate doesn't know its full story. In the heart of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district lies Alt-Marzahn, one of Berlin's best-preserved village greens: a winding street layout with the village church at its center, old farmhouses, the Marzahn Local History Museum, and a historic post mill. The contrast to the surrounding prefabricated architecture couldn't be starker – and it's precisely this contrast that gives the Christmas market its charm.
Village Church at the Center
The Marzahn Village Church dates back to the 13th century and is one of Berlin's oldest fieldstone churches. Wooden stalls line the Christmas market around the church and along the village green: mulled wine, bratwurst, potato pancakes, candied almonds, alongside stalls offering handmade gifts – felt goods, wooden toys, ceramics, candles, and small jewelry from Berlin manufacturers.
Program for Families
Unlike the large commercial Christmas markets at Gendarmenmarkt or Charlottenburg, the Alt-Marzahn Christmas Market focuses on a family atmosphere: A historic children's carousel for the little ones, St. Nicholas with gifts on Saturday afternoon, pony rides on both days, a small live music stage with local choirs and brass bands, and the village church's brass ensemble at dusk. Admission is free, and families from all over East Berlin and Brandenburg make the journey.
Marzahn-Hellersdorf Beyond the Stereotypes
The Marzahn-Hellersdorf district has its own, often underestimated identity: rural villages like Alt-Marzahn, Alt-Hellersdorf, Alt-Mahlsdorf, interspersed with the large housing estates built in the 1970s-80s, and extensive recreational areas to the south. The Alt-Marzahn Christmas Market is one of the most beautiful symbols of this distinctiveness – and a good reason to discover Berlin's eastern outskirts.
