Spring Festival on the Lower Rhine in Alpen

As the days get longer, the municipality of Alpen on the Lower Rhine invites you to the Spring Festival at Rathausplatz. The small community in the Wesel district is located between the Lower Rhine and the Reichswald, with just under 13,000 inhabitants. The Spring Festival is one of the most important town festivals of the year and has combined two concepts for several years: the classic Spring Festival with crafts and flea market, and the 5th Alpen Street Food Festival.

More than 50 Exhibitors – from Crafts to Flea Market Finds

More than 50 exhibitors are spread across Rathausplatz: artisans present pottery, woodwork, jewelry, and textiles. Alongside them, a classic flea market with private sellers and commercial providers. Those looking for an unusual gift or a vintage find will be satisfied here.

5th Alpen Street Food Festival

Running parallel to the Spring Festival is the 5th edition of the Alpen Street Food Festival. Food trucks bring international cuisine to the Lower Rhine: burgers and BBQ, tacos, pulled pork, Asian bowls, vegan options, sweets, and ice cream. This gives the 2026 Spring Festival a modern, urban flair – a deliberate contrast to the traditional flea market.

Children's Activities and Family Program

For children, there are play activities around Rathausplatz: carousels, bouncy castles, craft activities, face painting. The Spring Festival positions itself as a family day and is indeed small and manageable enough that parents don't have to constantly keep an eye on their children.

Sunday Shopping from 1 PM to 6 PM

The highlight for local retail is the Sunday shopping from 1 PM to 6 PM. Shops in Alpen open their doors outside of regular Sunday hours – an important sales event for the rural retail structure. Combined with the Spring Festival and Street Food Festival, it makes for an attractive day trip.

Alpen – Lower Rhine between Wesel and Moers

Alpen is located in the Wesel district, on the edge of the Reichswald forest. The municipality is reachable from the Ruhr area (Duisburg, Moers) in 30–45 minutes; from the Rhineland (Krefeld, Düsseldorf) in just over an hour. The journey is worthwhile for a weekend on the Lower Rhine: the Spring Festival on Sunday, and on Saturday, perhaps a bike tour through the lowlands or a walk in the Reichswald.

Street Food Festival Initiative as a Partner

The Street Food Festival Initiative is the industry association for street food organizers and food trucks in Germany. It curates the stalls, ensures hygiene standards, and provides a coordinated offering. The collaboration with the municipality of Alpen is already in its fifth year in 2026.
