Christmas Market with Medieval Charm
For those who prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of large Christmas markets and seek an authentic medieval experience with stollen and archery, Roßlau Castle offers one of the most charming Advent markets in Saxony-Anhalt. The castle, a medieval moated castle in the Roßlau district (city of Dessau-Roßlau, independent city), provides a backdrop of historic walls, a courtyard, and the renowned Ritterklause (knights' tavern). The event is organized by the Förderverein Wasserburg Roßlau e.V. (Friends of Roßlau Castle Association), which has been hosting the event on the 3rd Advent weekend for years.
"Christmas in the Middle Ages"
The motto demands more than just a few mulled wine stalls: the decoration team needs "countless hours" to adorn the castle in a pre-Christmas medieval style. On the meadow in front of the Ritterklause, the "Freyen Haufen zu Rosselowe" – a local medieval group – demonstrate archery, making the Middle Ages tangible. Children can shape their own cookies in the baking workshop, and children's theater is also part of the program.
Stollen Cutting and Partner City Initiative
Highlight on Saturday at 2 PM: the traditional stollen cutting – a tradition that has been part of Advent in Saxony-Anhalt for centuries. Another special feature: craftsmen and beverage vendors from the Czech partner city Roudnice nad Labem present their specialties. A new Christmas pyramid has been erected in recent years as a central element in the castle courtyard.
Roßlau — Anhalt's Moated Castle on the Elbe
Roßlau Castle on the outskirts of Roßlau is one of the few surviving moated castles in Saxony-Anhalt. It is located in the state of Saxony-Anhalt within the independent city of Dessau-Roßlau, which has united the formerly independent cities of Dessau and Roßlau since 2007. Dessau-Roßlau is a UNESCO World Heritage site (Bauhaus, Garden Kingdom), while Roßlau Castle remains a more understated highlight of the region.
