Andernach May City Festival on the Rhine Parks

For years, Andernach has skillfully used its Rhine Parks, with their unique location between the city walls and the Rhine riverbank, as a stage for major events. The May City Festival on May 8, 2026, continues this tradition and for many Andernach residents and visitors, it symbolically marks the beginning of the open-air season. The timing, coinciding with the 4th Andernach Beer Exchange (May 8 to 10, 2026), is deliberate: both events complement each other, creating a three-day Rhine experience together.

Andernach's Rhine Parks are among the most beautifully designed Rhine promenades along the entire Middle Rhine. Between the historic city wall with its distinctive Round Tower and the Rhine panorama offering views of the opposite bank and Hammerstein Castle, the city has created a green festival area that works ideally for various formats: concerts, markets, folk festivals (Volksfeste), the Festival of 1000 Lights, and the Andernach Summer Open Air – all utilize this space.

The city festival on May 8 begins in the late afternoon at 3:00 PM and continues into the evening. The program is curated by the City of Andernach in cooperation with local restaurateurs, associations, and the Beer Exchange organization. Classic elements of a Rhenish city festival are included: stalls with regional specialties – potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), bratwurst, tarte flambée (Flammkuchen), pizza, crêpes, Asian and Mediterranean specialties – local breweries and wineries serving drinks, live bands or DJ sets, a children's program, and a stage program with dance or folklore.

The temporal and spatial proximity to the 4th Andernach Beer Exchange means that visitors to the city festival can easily transition into the Beer Exchange atmosphere: over 300 types of beer from around the world, about 30 exhibitors, a huge beer garden – the Beer Exchange opening on the same Friday evening provides a natural continuation. Those planning a multi-day visit can combine the City Festival, the Beer Exchange, and a Sunday exploring Andernach's old town and the geyser.

For Middle Rhine tourists, the May City Festival is a welcome reason to visit Andernach and an indicator that the city is definitively launching its festival season in May.
