Advent market at the illuminated Schinderhannesturm with vintners from Rhein, Mosel, and Nahe
Simmern, the district town of the Rhein-Hunsrück district with just under 8,000 inhabitants, has consistently developed its Christmas market into "AdventLights" in recent years – with an elaborate light staging of the historic town center as its central hallmark. The focus is on the Schinderhannesturm, a well-preserved remnant of the medieval town wall, which is illuminated during the Advent season, making it visible far beyond the town's borders.
On the Schinderhannesplatz around the tower, vendors and clubs set up their stalls. Unlike many smaller Hunsrück markets, Simmern deliberately focuses on vintners from the three nearby wine-growing regions: Mittelrhein (especially Bopparder Hamm), Mosel (Lower Mosel between Cochem and Koblenz), and Nahe (Bad Kreuznach, Bingen). This results in an unusually wide selection of mulled wine – with genuine single-vineyard Rieslings instead of industrial products.
The craft market includes wood carvings, ceramics, felted and knitted products, jewelry, Advent wreaths, and arrangements. Regional products – honey, liqueurs, brandies, sausages, cheeses – round off the offerings. Culinary delights are dominated by Hunsrück classics: "Spießbraten" (roast pork) over a beechwood fire, bratwurst, potato pancakes, and tarte flambée.
The market is open on Saturdays from 3 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m.. Musical accompaniment is provided by local choirs, brass ensembles, and occasional smaller live acts. The light installation on the tower only unfolds its full effect after dark – making the market particularly atmospheric on Saturday evenings.
The 2026 market continues the proven AdventLights concept: strong light staging at the tower, curated selection of vintners from three growing regions, and crafts in focus. Saturday evening after dark is particularly atmospheric – the illumination then has its full effect.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: market opening with light staging on Saturday afternoon, stage program with choirs, visit from St. Nicholas on Sunday, catering by clubs and vintners.
Mulled wines from Mittelrhein, Mosel, and Nahe – Riesling, Spätburgunder, Glüh-Rosé. Also eggnog, children's punch, hot chocolate, candied almonds, "Spießbraten", bratwurst, potato pancakes, tarte flambée.
