A contemplative Advent celebration around the historic bakehouse in Vesser
The historic bakehouse in Vesser is an old communal bakehouse, like those that once stood in many Thuringian villages: a brick wood-fired oven where the entire village took turns baking its bread. Today, the bakehouse has been restored and is fired up by the village association for special occasions – the bakehouse festival in summer and the Advent am Backhaus in December are the two highlights. In the glow of torches and lanterns, locals and guests gather around the bakehouse, the scent of freshly baked bread wafting through the cold winter air.
The program is deliberately kept small: communal Advent singing with the local church choir or singing group, a stall with mulled wine and children's punch, a stall with freshly baked bread from the wood-fired oven – directly from the oven into the bag. Candles, lanterns, and perhaps a small fire at the bakehouse create the atmosphere. No light show, no market operations – one hour of shared Advent spirit.
Vesser is a district of the independent city of Suhl in the state of Thuringia, located in the middle of the Thuringian Forest Nature Park. The village lies in the Vessertal valley, a narrow high valley framed by forests on the southern slope of the Rennsteig ridge. The Vesser river itself, a small river, flows through the valley and gives it its name. Vesser promotes itself as 'the most beautiful valley in Central Germany' – and indeed, the landscape with its meadows, forests, streams, and half-timbered houses is exceptionally well-preserved. The village has about 250 inhabitants and a lively club life organized by the association Vesser e.V.
The Advent am Backhaus is one of those events that only reveals its charm when you take it for what it is: not a tourist spectacle, but a village tradition to which everyone is warmly invited. Anyone hiking or staying in the Thuringian Forest in early December should plan a detour to Vesser. In the glow of torches, with a mug of mulled wine in hand and a piece of freshly baked wood-fired bread, you can experience the Advent season as impressively as almost nowhere else.
