Season Finale on the Uphuser Meer
The Uphuser Meer is one of the most attractive inland waters for sailing in East Frisia. The lake in Emden's Uphusen district offers ideal conditions for club regattas and is home to the Wassersportverein Uphuser Meer e.V. (WSU). The Aalregatta is traditionally the last major club regatta of the season — and at the same time the convivial highlight of the club year.
Tradition with an East Frisian Touch
The name "Aalregatta" refers to the East Frisian tradition of celebrating the season's end with a communal eel dinner. Smoked eel has long been a specialty in East Frisia and in the Dutch-North German coastal regions, served on festive occasions. The combination of a sporting regatta and a culinary club festival is what gives this event its special charm.
Races and Boat Classes
Sailing takes place in several boat classes — typically dinghies such as Pirat, Conger, Optimist (youth), as well as open classes. The races are held on the Uphuser Meer, with the start and finish at the club grounds. The exact number of races and classes will be adjusted depending on the weather and entries.
Club Life by the Water
The Wassersportverein Uphuser Meer e.V. is a classic East Frisian sports and leisure club focusing on sailing, windsurfing, and boating. Members volunteer their time for the clubhouse, jetty, youth work, and regatta organization. The Aalregatta is one of the club's most important showcases and traditionally attracts guests from neighboring clubs as well.
Date 2026
The Aalregatta 2026 will take place on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Registration and detailed notice of race via the website of the Emden Sailing Club or the WSU.
