Grand Village Jubilee for the 800th Anniversary of the Östrum District
Östrum is one of the older districts of the town Bad Salzdetfurth in the southern Hildesheim district. The village is using the occasion of its first documented mention in 1226 to celebrate its 800th anniversary in 2026. Eight centuries of village history – from a medieval settlement through the agriculturally dominated 19th century to a modern residential community in the commuter belt of Hildesheim – will be made visible and tangible over a festive weekend.
The ceremonial core is a formal act where Östrum's history will be honored. Representatives of the town of Bad Salzdetfurth, the Hildesheim district, churches, and associations will come together to celebrate the jubilee with the village population. A grand parade through the village will bring the 800 years of history to life: historical costumes, floats depicting scenes from different eras, associations, and music bands will march through Östrum.
Accompanying the ceremonial act, exhibitions on the village's history will be shown: old photographs, documents, maps, school chronicles, and memorabilia from village life. Former residents will share their memories, and local historians will guide interested parties to historical sites within the village. This creates a vivid picture of Östrum's history that is intended to resonate long after the jubilee.
On a stage in the village center or in the festival tent, there will be musical performances, theatre productions, and show acts. Local choirs, music associations, and theatre groups will shape the program, complemented by external artists. In the evenings, the festival tent will transform into the social hub with dance evenings where Östrum families, associations, and guests come together.
For Östrum's youngest residents, there is a dedicated program with hands-on activities, games, a bouncy castle, and a face-painting corner. A children's version of the parade or a treasure hunt through the village will make the 800th-anniversary celebration an unforgettable experience for children too.
The jubilee is supported by a festival committee composed of members from Östrum's associations, the church, and dedicated individuals. Preparations span several years and mobilize the entire village community. The festive weekend thus also serves as a moment for Östrum to visibly manifest as a village community and reflect on its identity.
The festival committee, composed of members from Östrum's associations, has prepared a program that connects the village's history with its present-day life. Historical floats, traditional costumes, exhibitions, and stories will meet stage performances, family activities, and an evening dance ball.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring.
