750 Years of City Rights

The first documented granting of city rights to Kaiserslautern dates back to 1276 under King Rudolf of Habsburg. This makes the city one of the oldest in the Palatinate and allows it to celebrate a 750th city anniversary in 2026, encompassing the city's history from its medieval imperial domain to its present-day status as the capital of West Palatinate with a vibrant university and industrial landscape, through its periods under Electoral Palatinate, Bavarian, and Palatinate rule. The festive concert on June 26, 2026, in the Fruchthalle marks one of the central official acts of the anniversary year.

The Fruchthalle as the Venue for the Ceremony

The choice of the Fruchthalle as the venue for the festive concert is symbolic. Built in the 1840s as a market hall and concert hall, the Fruchthalle is one of the most beautiful buildings of its kind in Southern Germany and has been the city's primary concert hall for generations. Its richly decorated wooden ceiling, wall paintings, and acoustically excellent design make it the perfect festive venue. The festive concert utilizes these qualities for an evening that transcends the ordinary urban event format.

Program and Participants

The exact program and the list of participants for the festive concert will be published by the 750 Years KL staff office in the summer of 2026. Orchestral contributions – possibly featuring the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie as a resident guest – as well as vocal and solo performances related to the Palatinate and the city's history are expected.
