Grand democracy festival commemorating the Hambach Festival of 1832 with a ceremony, city program, and music under the motto "Planting Freedom"
1832. The Festival of Democracy is one of Rhineland-Palatinate's most significant political and cultural festivals. Every two years, it commemorates the Hambach Festival of 1832, where around 30,000 people — a massive number for the time — peacefully demonstrated for German unity, freedom, and democracy. The sea of black, red, and gold flags on Hambach Castle is considered the cradle of modern German democracy.
The festival format was re-conceptualized in 2022 by the city of Neustadt an der Weinstraße and the Hambach Castle Foundation and has been held every two years since. The 2026 edition will take place from Friday, May 29 to Sunday, May 31, under the motto "Planting Freedom" — an allusion to the need to actively cultivate democratic values.
The kick-off on Friday, May 29, will feature a traditional ceremony at Hambach Castle (invitation only, live stream via OK Weinstraße). The highlight will be the laudation by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for the Polish civil rights activist and former ombudsman Prof. Dr. Adam Bodnar, one of the most important European voices for the rule of law.
On Saturday, May 30, the main program will unfold in Neustadt's city center. The official opening at 11:30 AM in the market square will be attended by Federal President Steinmeier and Minister-President Schnieder. Afterward, the entire city center will offer a diverse program: discussions, readings, workshops, and concerts. Performing on the festival stages will be Friends Don't Lie, Woifeschdkänisch, Attic Stories, Jasmin Perret, and Chaoze One — a mix of regional and national acts representing the diversity of democratic culture.
A wine village in the Rathausinnenhof (town hall courtyard) will offer Palatinate wines and specialties — a symbolic connection between Palatinate joie de vivre and democratic identity that has been part of Hambach Castle since 1832. On Sunday, May 31, the program will move back to Hambach Castle for the festive closing.
The 2026 edition of the democracy festival is the fourth since its re-conceptualization in 2022 and is themed around "Planting Freedom." Over three festival days, the program combines an official ceremony, a city festival atmosphere, political education, and a musical cultural program.
The 2026 program is already set in its key points — ceremony with the Federal President, opening with top politicians on Saturday, five main music acts, and a wine village — and will be further detailed by the organizers in late spring/early summer.
