125 Years of Tradition

The Dernbach Kirmes dates back to 1901, making it one of the oldest continuously celebrated Volksfeste in the western Westerwald. The first Kirmes festival in its current form was held in 1901 — a tradition that has continued to this day, with brief interruptions during the two World Wars. The 2026 anniversary is an occasion for a particularly festive program.

Dernbach in the Kannenbäckerland

The municipality of Dernbach is located in the Wirges administrative district, right in the heart of the Kannenbäckerland. The village is known for its Pietist tradition (Motherhouse of the Dernbach Sisters) and its lively club scene. The Kirmes is one of the village's most important identity-forming events, organized with great dedication by local clubs.

The Kirmesgesellschaft Dernbach

The Kirmes is organized by the local Kirmesgesellschaft, which upholds the festival through tradition and innovation. Young and old members work hand in hand to keep the Kirmes tradition alive. For 2026, the society has already released initial announcements via Facebook and its website in 2025, promising a “special anniversary program.”

Classic Program Elements

As with all Westerwald Kirmessen, the program follows a proven structure: Opening on Friday evening with the raising of the Kirmesbaum (festival tree), live music and concerts on Saturday and Sunday evenings, the traditional Kirmeszug (parade) on Sunday, and a Frühschoppen (morning pint/gathering) and festival parade on Monday. Additional highlights are expected for the 2026 anniversary — possibly a celebratory ceremony, a historical retrospective, or a particularly high-caliber concert.

An Anniversary to Celebrate Together

The 125th anniversary provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the ongoing tradition but also to honor the history of the village and the region. Numerous former residents of Dernbach are expected to return to their hometown for the anniversary, along with many guests from all over the Westerwald.
