The first and largest football film festival in the world — Berlinale meets World Cup
The 11mm International Football Film Festival was founded in 2003 by the Berlin-based association Brot & Spiele e.V. — as the world's first festival exclusively dedicated to films about football. The idea: to build a bridge between the Berlinale (film culture) and the World Cup (sport) and to illuminate football not just as a game, but as a cultural phenomenon through film. Since then, 11mm has developed into a globally recognized special format — films from 17 countries, documentaries, feature films, short animations, reports.
Over 40 films in five festival days, sorted into feature films and short films, with thematic focuses:
The Colosseum cinema in Prenzlauer Berg (Pankow district) is Berlin's oldest cinema and has been the 11mm's regular venue for decades. With its several auditoriums, the festival can run parallel programs — the large hall for premieres and discussion panels, smaller halls for short film blocks and reruns. The Colosseum combines an atmosphere of old cinema tradition and sporting enthusiasm with the festival.
11mm is part of Festiwelt Berlin, a network of Berlin film festivals aiming to make the city's cinematic diversity visible. The festival is organized by the non-profit association Brot & Spiele e.V., which also runs an accompanying educational program: 11mmCheck — an educational project for 10- to 16-year-olds in rural areas, where young people produce their own short films with cameras and footballs.
Important supporters include the Drosos Foundation, Volkswagen, and the DFB Culture Foundation. The funding allows the festival to show an international program — without strong sponsorship dependence on a single club or association.
The 21st edition falls between the Berlinale and the end of the Bundesliga season — typical for 11mm, which positions itself precisely in this calendar gap. The organizer is Brot & Spiele e.V. in Berlin in cooperation with Festiwelt Berlin. Tickets and program are available in advance, with the first films often selling out quickly.
Special Guest in 2026 is Hermann Gerland — one of the defining figures of German football in recent decades, assistant coach of the national team under several head coaches. Discussions with special guests are integrated into the festival and usually part of the film blocks.
