About 11mm Football Film Festival

Between the Berlinale and the World Cup season, the 11mm Football Film Festival fills a specific gap in Berlin's film landscape: for five days, the festival at the Colosseum in Prenzlauer Berg shows over 40 short and feature films from 17 countries — from documentaries about legends like Luis Enrique and Peter Schmeichel to classics like 'Shaolin Soccer' or 'Die Wilden Kerle'. The 21st edition in 2026, from March 26th to 30th.

The world's first football film festival

The 11mm International Football Film Festival was founded in 2003 by the Berlin-based association Brot & Spiele e.V. — as the world's first festival exclusively dedicated to films about football. The idea: to build a bridge between the Berlinale (film culture) and the World Cup (sport) and to illuminate football not just as a game, but as a cultural phenomenon through film. Since then, 11mm has developed into a globally recognized special format — films from 17 countries, documentaries, feature films, short animations, reports.

What is shown

Over 40 films in five festival days, sorted into feature films and short films, with thematic focuses:

  • Documentaries about legends: Portraits of coaches and players, in 2026 including Luis Enrique and Peter Schmeichel
  • Classics: Rerun of old films such as Shaolin Soccer (Stephen Chow, 2001), Kes (Ken Loach, 1969), Die Wilden Kerle (Joachim Masannek, 2003)
  • New releases 2024/2025: current documentaries and feature films from Germany and internationally
  • Short film program: 10–20 short films distributed throughout the festival
  • Special Guests: Discussions with coaches, players, directors — in 2026 including Hermann Gerland (DFB assistant coach, among others)

Colosseum as the venue

The Colosseum cinema in Prenzlauer Berg (Pankow district) is Berlin's oldest cinema and has been the 11mm's regular venue for decades. With its several auditoriums, the festival can run parallel programs — the large hall for premieres and discussion panels, smaller halls for short film blocks and reruns. The Colosseum combines an atmosphere of old cinema tradition and sporting enthusiasm with the festival.

Festiwelt Berlin and Brot & Spiele e.V.

11mm is part of Festiwelt Berlin, a network of Berlin film festivals aiming to make the city's cinematic diversity visible. The festival is organized by the non-profit association Brot & Spiele e.V., which also runs an accompanying educational program: 11mmCheck — an educational project for 10- to 16-year-olds in rural areas, where young people produce their own short films with cameras and footballs.

Funding partners

Important supporters include the Drosos Foundation, Volkswagen, and the DFB Culture Foundation. The funding allows the festival to show an international program — without strong sponsorship dependence on a single club or association.

11mm Football Film Festival — edition 2026

The 21st edition of the 11mm International Football Film Festival Berlin runs from March 26th to 30th, 2026, at the Colosseum Berlin in Prenzlauer Berg. Over 40 films from 17 countries, documentaries about legendary coaches, classics like Shaolin Soccer and Kes, current premieres. Opening film: 'Ein Sommer in Italien – WM 1990'.

The 21st edition falls between the Berlinale and the end of the Bundesliga season — typical for 11mm, which positions itself precisely in this calendar gap. The organizer is Brot & Spiele e.V. in Berlin in cooperation with Festiwelt Berlin. Tickets and program are available in advance, with the first films often selling out quickly.

Special Guest in 2026 is Hermann Gerland — one of the defining figures of German football in recent decades, assistant coach of the national team under several head coaches. Discussions with special guests are integrated into the festival and usually part of the film blocks.
