Village Anniversary with Historic Parade in the Sömmerda District
Rettgenstedt is a small district of the municipality Ostramondra in the Sömmerda district, nestled in the hilly landscape of the Thuringian Basin. The first documented mention dates back to the year 876, when a certain «Hoholt» donated 40 acres of land in «Ratingestete» — the village's name at the time — to the Imperial Abbey of Fulda. This deed of donation is the earliest written record of the place and the reason for the grand anniversary in 2026.
The village community and the local heritage association Heimatverein Ostramondra/Rettgenstedt e.V. are planning a multi-day program for 2026. The highlight is the anniversary weekend from June 26 to 28, 2026, featuring a grand parade on Saturday, June 27. Associations, companies, groups, and private individuals are invited to participate in the parade with their own contributions.
The parade starts at the Anger Rettgenstedt (Kindergarten) — registration for participating groups begins at 10:00 AM. The parade winds through the village, showcasing 1150 years of history in historical scenes: from medieval village life, through the Peasants' Wars and industrialization, up to the present day. Associations from Ostramondra and neighboring communities will bring floats, traditional costumes, and music.
Village anniversaries like Rettgenstedt's 1150th anniversary are important occasions in Thuringia to make the history and identity of rural communities visible. They bring together generations, associations, and former residents who come «home» for the weekend. The program combines historical remembrance with current community life — and is one of the significant summer events in the Sömmerda district.
In addition to the main weekend in June, another anniversary festival is planned for July 31 and August 1, 2026 — details will be announced by the heritage association in the spring.
The 2026 anniversary weekend marks the highlight of the «1150 Years Rettgenstedt» festival year. Three days of program: Friday evening opening with a ceremony, Saturday the grand parade through the village, Sunday within the village with a family program.
