About Zwibbelsmaat

The Zwiebelmarkt Bad Breisig – known locally in the Rhineland as Zwibbelsmaat – is one of the oldest folk festivals on the Middle Rhine. For four days in September, market stalls, amusement rides, and regional vendors transform the Rhine promenade and the town centre of Bad Breisig into an extensive festival mile. Tradition, culinary delights, and family entertainment come together here on the third weekend of September. Free admission, payment only for food, drinks, and rides.

Traditional Folk Festival on the Rhine

The Zwiebelmarkt dates back to a historic market fair where farmers and traders sold their produce – especially onions – on the Rhine. Over the centuries, this market evolved into a folk festival that has deeply shaped Bad Breisig's identity to this day. The local Rhineland name Zwibbelsmaat also signifies the event's deep roots in the local language and culture.

Market Stalls, Amusement Rides, and Culinary Delights

Today, market stalls offering regional products, arts and crafts, and classic market goods line the Rhine promenade and the town centre for four festival days. Amusement rides provide a funfair atmosphere, while snack and sweet stalls cater to the culinary cravings. The onion remains a central theme: it appears as onion cake, onion bread, and in numerous other variations.

Rhine Scenery as a Stage

Bad Breisig is located directly on the Rhine, and its long promenade offers an unusually attractive festival backdrop. Ship traffic, the castle scenery on the opposite bank, and the tranquility of the river lend the market a special atmosphere that sets it apart from purely urban folk festivals.

Family-Friendly and Compact

The event is designed to be family-friendly: short distances, plenty of seating, and a diverse mix of visitors including families, seniors, and day-trippers from the Rhineland. Travel by Mittelrheinbahn is particularly convenient; combining it with a Rhine boat trip is also a great option.
